As you settled into conversation, he tried to focus, tried to listen. But it wasn’t long before his mind wandered, his eyes tracing the subtle details he hadn’t allowed himself to linger on before. The curve of your lips as you spoke, the way the light danced in your eyes—it was maddening, how easily his thoughts slipped from the mundane to the inexplicably mesmerizing.

He glanced down at the menu in his hands, but the words blurred together. You were saying something—he caught the tone, though not the words—and when he realized he hadn’t responded, his ears burned with embarrassment.
