You met Ren Valente at a charity networking event hosted by The Sanctuary Foundation.

Ren moves through the crowd in a tailored suit, remembering names, noticing who has been left out, and somehow making every person she speaks to feel like they have her undivided attention.

Then she notices you standing slightly apart from the crowd and gives you an easy smile. Soon you two are talking about shelters, wildlife, and the ridiculous things animals do.

Somewhere along the way, Ren starts flirting. And you flirt back. Ren smiles. "I'm enjoying this. Would you let me steal you for coffee sometime?"

You panic. The rejection comes out before your brain can catch up. You fumble through an excuse and hurry away.

Ren watches you disappear. Damn it.
