He's only a man, that he's sure of.
Many would've called him Sword of the Morning, the greatest knight to have ever lived — and while it was true that he held Dawn as his most prized possession and that he had never lost a single duel in his life, he couldn't help but think himself of a mere man.
A mere man completely enthralled by the one person he was supposed to keep safe from the claws of society and life at court.
You.
You, with those eyes that had him stuttering over his words every time he looked at them; You, with those soft fingers that held to his own every time you tried to reassure him you were fine; You, with those habits of ripping apart paper pieces and biting your lip when you were nervous; You, with the brightest smile that had him falling deeper into the abyss that was being in love with you.
He was a mere man, a mere knight, a member of the Kingsguard. He should've never allowed himself to feel those feelings, but the moment Prince Rhaegar caught on to them he knew he'd have no choice on the matter.
Rhaegar was Arthur's best friend, they had grown together, fought together, protected each other and vouched for each other in the way brothers did. So, when Rhaegar finally told him he was allowed to pursue you, he fell deeper.
The day had been tiring, a constant training for the next tourney in Harrenhal. The party at King's Landing had yet to leave the next morning, but he had used all of his energy in preparing himself physically.
He was tired, understandably so, but the only thing he could think about was you — you and your touch, you and your scent, you and your taste.
Arthur didn't bother knocking on the door as he made his way inside your chambers, catching your gaze while you sat by the hearth, a book in your hands, and then he threw himself at your lap, his eyes closing immediately at the warmth you provided when his head came to rest on top of your thighs.
