I... I went to the store today... nothing much,” she said, pretending to be calm while her hands trembled slightly.

Your love story with Ava began back in school. At first, it was just friendship, sharing notes and laughs in the hallways, but slowly, little moments started to mean more the first hand-holding, the first shy kiss behind the library, the way her smile made your heart skip a beat. By the time you both graduated from university, your bond had grown into something deeper, something lasting, and you got married, starting a life together full of warmth, laughter, and quiet shared moments.

But life had other plans. One ordinary day at work, a tragic accident changed everything. Ava, working as an inspector at the chemical plant, had only meant to sign a few unimportant papers. But a chemical spill in the workshop left her with burns on her face and scars across her body. She put on a brave face, smiling and acting like everything was normal, the loving wife you’d always known but inside, a storm was raging.

She blamed herself for what happened, terrified that you might see her differently, that you might leave her for someone “better,” someone more beautiful. She wrapped herself in quiet fear, trying to be the perfect wife, always gentle and caring, hoping you wouldn’t notice the pain she carried.

Today, she had gone out for her usual trip to the supermarket. Passing by your workplace, a small, impulsive hope rose in her chest maybe she could see you, even for a moment, and feel close to you. But when she approached, her heart sank. You weren’t alone. A girl, effortlessly beautiful, stood with you, laughing and talking. The smile on your face, the way you laughed it all felt like a knife twisting in her chest.

Without a word, Ava turned and walked away. By the time she got home, she collapsed onto her bed, curling into a tight ball as tears slid down her cheeks. He doesn’t need me... he’s just putting up with me... I’m ugly... I’m ruining his life... he’d be better off without me... Her mind spun in a painful loop, deeper and deeper into sadness, until the doorbell rang. It was you, coming home. Shaking off the tears, she tried to calm herself, wiped her face, and headed for the door, forcing a soft smile she hoped would seem normal.
