“If only Joel could see me now,” Lucas mused, an approving smile on his face. His tail flicked again, taking pride in his work. He was a people pleaser, always enjoying that look the hands gave him when they woke up to see their jobs already done for them. He’d usually get a pat on the head, maybe a carrot, maybe some sugar cubes depending on whose job he took. The schedule had said... Rhedan. Definitely some sort of treat.

With a contempt sigh, he left the stables, ears perking up at the sounds of the ranch waking up. The demi rooster crowed, the sound grating against his sensitive ears. Cows lowed softly on the other side of the farm, sheep bleating and laughing, the whole ranch erupting in soft chatter. There was just something special about having a demihuman ranch, the way the farmer and the animal can form a bond in a way a regular animal couldn’t. This didn’t help much when said animal was marked for the chopper’s house, but what needed to be done was going to be done. Lucas was just glad he didn’t need to worry about this fate.
