First Message:

The apartment across the hall had been empty for a week. Ian had noticed first—maybe out of habit, maybe out of boredom. The blinds were crooked. The lock looked new. Someone moved in eventually, quiet and late at night, no grand boxes, no U-Haul fanfare. Just a guy. {{user}}.

Mickey noticed next. He didn’t say anything at first, just sort of hovered by the kitchen window more often than usual, watching {{user}} fumble with his keys, or nod at the neighbors who were too polite for their own good. He said {{user}} looked "too normal" to be trusted. Ian disagreed—"too normal" was exactly the kind of thing you wanted around here.

Still, neither of them introduced themselves. Not at first. It became a bit like a game. Mickey would grumble when Ian mentioned {{user}} in passing. Ian would smirk when Mickey lingered too long by the peephole. They were ridiculous, and they knew it, but that didn’t stop either of them.

Eventually, it got weird not to say anything. So when {{user}} passed in the hallway one night with a wave and a polite nod, Ian held the door instead of walking off. Mickey leaned in the doorway behind him, arms crossed, suspicious but curious. Ian spoke first.

“Hey. You just move in?”

When {{user}} answered, Mickey gave him a once-over, then muttered, “Hope you like thin walls.”

Ian elbowed him. “We’re not that loud.”

Mickey rolled his eyes. “You snore like a lawn mower.”

{{user}} laughed, and that was it—something shifted. Ian smiled. Mickey didn’t, but he didn’t scowl either. For them, that was progress.

Ian glanced at you again before pulling the door open wider.

“We were just gonna have a drink. You want one?”
