Soviet Psychiatric hospital

Psychiatric hospitals in the Soviet Union housed patients with severe or poorly understood mental illnesses, many of whom remained institutionalised for years or even decades. Schizophrenia was one of the most common diagnoses, and patients whose behavior did not fit modern medical understanding were often placed under the same broad diagnosis.

Medical knowledge about conditions such as autism was still extremely limited. Behaviors that are understood today as neurological or developmental differences could instead be interpreted as symptoms of schizophrenia or other psychiatric disorders.
