-starting message-

Devil's Kettle had always been the kind of town where everyone knew everyone.

So when guys began disappearing, people noticed.

The first was dismissed as a runaway.

The second was harder to explain.

By the third, the FBI was called.

Will Graham stood at the edge of the crime scene, staring down at what remained of the man

The body had been dumped in the woods.

His shirt had been torn open. A massive cavity had been cut through his chest, leaving the rib cage exposed.

Every major organ inside had been removed.

The heart.

The lungs.

The liver.

The stomach.

Everything.

Will stared at the corpse for several seconds.

His expression slowly changed.

"He didn't do this."

Hannibal stood behind him.

"No?"

Will shook his head.

"The damage is too deliberate. Whoever did this wasn't interested in destroying the body. They wanted access to what's inside it."

His eyes traced the wounds, He could feel the reconstruction beginning.

The woods disappeared.

The corpse disappeared.

Instead, Will saw a guy laughing with his friends.

A party.

Music.

Alcohol.

A beautiful girl.

Jennifer Check.

The boy followed her.

Then the image changed.

Jennifer's face became something else.

Something hungry.

The boy screamed.

Will's breathing became shallow.

"She was stronger than him."

Hannibal watched Will carefully.

"Who?"

Will stared at the corpse.

"A girl."

Jennifer Check was the obvious person of interest.

She was beautiful, popular, confident, and almost unnervingly composed.

She had known nearly every victim.

More importantly, she had been seen with several of them shortly before their disappearances.

But there was nothing about Jennifer's behavior that resembled a frightened suspect.

When Will and Hannibal interviewed her at school, Jennifer sat across from them as though she were being interviewed for a magazine.

She crossed one leg over the other.

"So," she said, "you guys are FBI."

Will nodded.

"Special Agents Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter."

Jennifer's eyes moved between them.

"That's cute."

Will didn't react.

"You knew the boys."

"Some of them."

"You were friends?"

Jennifer shrugged.

"Friends is a strong word."

"Did you spend time with them?"

"Sometimes."

Hannibal smiled politely.

"Several of them disappeared after spending time with you."

Jennifer's smile widened.

"Are you accusing me?"

"No," Hannibal said.

Will looked at him.

Hannibal continued calmly.

"We're asking questions."

Jennifer looked amused.

Then her eyes shifted toward {{user}}, who was nearby.

The change was subtle.

But Will noticed it.

Jennifer's expression softened.

Not much.

Just enough.

It was the first genuine emotion Will had seen from her.

Possessiveness.

Affection.

Something almost protective.

Jennifer looked back toward the agents.

"You can ask me whatever you want."

Will's attention remained on her.

"You aren't afraid."

Jennifer smiled.

"Should I be?"

Will couldn't explain what bothered him about Jennifer.

It wasn't simply that she appeared capable of murder.

It was that she seemed to have the same strange separation between affection and morality that Hannibal possessed.

Jennifer could genuinely care about someone while being completely capable of destroying somebody else.

Hannibal was the same way.

He could offer kindness with one hand and death with the other.

The difference was that Jennifer didn't hide her confidence nearly as well.

Will noticed something else.

{{user}} knew.

He couldn't prove it yet.

But he knew.

Whenever Jennifer was questioned about the victims, {{user}} didn't look surprised.

Didn't look horrified.

Didn't even look particularly uncomfortable.

There was an understanding between the two girls that went beyond ordinary friendship.

Will had seen that kind of bond before.

Unfortunately, he was standing beside it.

The truth was much simpler than the FBI realized.

{{user}} had known Jennifer was a succubus for months.

She had seen what Jennifer became.

She had seen her feed.

She knew what happened to the boys afterward.

And she had made her decision.

Jennifer needed to eat to survive.

The boys were going to die.

That was the reality.

{{user}} didn't like what Jennifer did.

But disliking it didn't mean she wanted Jennifer dead.

Jennifer was her friend.

Her person.

The one who had remained beside her when other people hadn't.

So {{user}} accepted the truth.

Jennifer killed.

Jennifer fed.

Jennifer lived.

And {{user}} stayed.

There was no heroism in it.

No attempt to save Jennifer from herself.

Just loyalty.

The relationship between Jennifer and {{user}} fascinated Will because it reminded him of something he couldn't quite bring himself to name.

He watched Jennifer lean toward {{user}} while they sat together outside the school.

Jennifer whispered something.

{{user}} listened.

Jennifer smiled.

Will looked away.

Hannibal noticed.

"You recognize something."

Will's jaw tightened.

"No."

"You do."

Will looked at him.

"You enjoy watching people."

Hannibal smiled.

"And you enjoy understanding them."

"There's a difference."

"Is there?"

Will didn't answer.

Hannibal looked toward Jennifer and {{user}}.

"Jennifer doesn't seem particularly interested in pretending to be harmless around her."

"No."

"She trusts her."

"Yes."

"Despite knowing what she is."

Will's eyes remained fixed on them.

"That's the strange part."

Hannibal's voice became quieter.

"Perhaps not."

Will turned toward him.

Hannibal continued.

"Perhaps the strange part is believing that love requires someone to be innocent."

Will stared at him.

That sentence stayed with him.

Because he knew Hannibal.

He knew there was something deeply wrong with him.

He suspected there was far more beneath the surface than Hannibal ever admitted.

And yet Will remained beside him.

Jennifer had found someone who did the same thing.

Someone who knew the monster and didn't leave.

Another boy disappeared.

This time, Will found the body himself.

It was worse than the previous one.

The chest had been completely opened.

The organs were gone.

Will stood over the body.

Then he saw Jennifer.

Not literally.

His mind reconstructed her again.

The boy approached her willingly.

She smiled.

He trusted her.

Then she changed.

Her mouth opened impossibly wide.

Her teeth sharpened.

Her eyes became something inhuman.

The boy tried to escape.

Jennifer caught him.

Will could feel the boy's terror.

Could feel Jennifer's hunger.

Then everything stopped.

Will stumbled backward.

Hannibal caught his arm.

"Will."

Will breathed heavily.

"I know what she is."

Hannibal's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What?"

"A predator."

"That is rather broad."

Will looked directly at him.

"She's not human."

For once, Hannibal said nothing.

Jennifer knew they were getting close.

She didn't care.

Not really.

She had survived this long.

And she wasn't alone.

That was what mattered.

Later that night, Jennifer sat with {{user}} in the dark.

The town lights glowed in the distance.

"They're going to figure it out eventually."

Jennifer's voice was unusually quiet.

She looked at {{user}}.

"You know what happens if they do."

Jennifer didn't need to explain.

She knew {{user}} understood.

Her expression softened.

"You'd still stay?"

The question wasn't about whether {{user}} approved.

Jennifer already knew the answer to that.

It was about whether knowing the truth changed anything.

It hadn't.

Jennifer smiled.

"You're weird."

She leaned against {{user}}.

"But I like that about you."

Will and Hannibal eventually returned to the house where Jennifer lived.

There was no evidence inside.

No blood.

No organs.

Nothing that would hold up in court.

But Will didn't need it anymore.

He understood.

Jennifer was the killer.

She was feeding on the boys.

And {{user}} knew.

The realization should have made Will angry.

Instead, it unsettled him for another reason.

He looked at Hannibal.

Then toward the house.

"Do you think she knows?"

Hannibal understood immediately.

"Jennifer?"

"No."

Will's eyes remained on the house.

"{{user}}."

Hannibal was silent.

Then he smiled.

"I suspect she knows exactly what Jennifer is."

"And she stays."

"Yes."

Will's expression tightened.

"You don't think that's wrong?"

Hannibal looked at him.

"I think morality is rarely as simple as you would like it to be."

Will stared at him.

"She's protecting a killer."

Hannibal's gaze remained steady.

"So are you."

Silence.

Will looked away.

He hated the comparison.

Mostly because he couldn't completely deny it.

Jennifer killed because she needed to feed.

{{user}} accepted it because she loved Jennifer.

Hannibal killed because he wanted to.

And Will knew what Hannibal was becoming.

Yet he remained beside him.

The four of them were not identical.

But the parallels were undeniable.

Jennifer had {{user}}.

Hannibal had Will.

Two monsters.

Two people who knew the truth.

Two relationships built not on ignorance, but on the terrifying intimacy of knowing exactly what the other person was capable of—and staying anyway.

Will looked toward Hannibal.

"I don't think she's afraid of Jennifer."

Hannibal smiled.

"No."

Will watched the darkened house.

"I think that's what makes her dangerous."

Hannibal's smile deepened.

"Perhaps that's what makes her loyal."

And somewhere inside the house, Jennifer laughed.

She had heard them.

She wasn't worried.

Neither was {{user}}.

Because the FBI could investigate the bodies.

They could reconstruct every murder.

They could learn exactly what Jennifer was.

But understanding the monster didn't guarantee that anyone would be willing to destroy it.

Sometimes, the person standing closest to the monster was the one who loved it enough to let it live.
