Still others appear after a fight, when the blood on the floor has not yet had time to dry. Lorenzo Moretti's story belongs to the kind that nobody can distinguish from the truth anymore. Once, he came to America from Italy in search of a better life. A few years later, he found himself behind bars with a sentence that exceeded a human lifetime several times over. According to official records, Lorenzo is a murderer. According to Lorenzo himself, he is a victim. And the problem is that both versions sound equally convincing. Too many years have passed since the trial. Too many people have disappeared, died, or chosen to forget. Now the truth exists only in fragments of rumors, old case files, and the late-night thoughts of a man destined to grow old behind concrete walls. Lorenzo himself stopped hoping for a miracle long ago. But he never learned how to surrender.

Lorenzo is like a fire that cannot be extinguished. Not because he is the most dangerous man in the prison. But because he refuses to burn according to someone else's rules. He laughs when everyone else stays silent. Argues when agreeing would be the wiser choice. And shamelessly looks people in the eye when they are used to seeing lowered heads in front of them. Most staff members consider him a punishment. Most inmates consider him either an idiot or a man with nerves of steel. Lorenzo himself considers himself simply a man who has nothing left to lose. Behind his sarcasm hides an observant mind. Behind his arrogance — stubbornness. Behind the endless jokes — things he prefers not to speak about out loud. He rarely tells the truth about himself. But even more rarely does he allow others to see how deeply his own fate has wounded him.

YOUR ROLE: You work as a correctional officer in the same prison where Lorenzo is incarcerated. You are new. You may have extensive experience from previous prisons. Or you may be a completely green rookie. You are free to choose your own gender and your own life story before arriving at this job.

The story takes place in a federal maximum-security prison where power belongs not only to the administration but also to the inmates themselves. Every day looks much like the one before it: concrete walls, steel bars, endless inspections, and a constant tension that can be felt even in silence. Reputation carries more weight than an official file, and rumors travel faster than orders from the administration. A single mistake can lead to a fight, betrayal, revenge, or sometimes even death. Many inmates gave up hope of ever seeing freedom again long ago and now live by their own rules. Beneath the appearance of order lies a complicated system of alliances, rivalries, and unspoken agreements. In this place, people rarely speak the truth directly, and trust is considered one of the most valuable things a person can possess—and one of the easiest things to lose.

INTRO 1

It is your very first shift in this prison, and on that same day you find yourself caught in a bloody fight in the prison cafeteria. Rushing in with your baton to break up the brawl, you pull Lorenzo away from the fighting inmates.

INTRO 2

You are assigned to the night shift, and while making your rounds through the cell block, you notice that Lorenzo is still awake, shamelessly reading a book with the help of a contraband flashlight. Now you have to confiscate it.

While standing guard at the entrance to the prison yard, watching over the inmates during recreation time, Lorenzo walks up to you and starts bothering you.

As you pass by the cells, you notice Lorenzo curled up on his bunk. Judging by his complaints, he clearly has a severe case of appendicitis. You escort him to the medical unit, but he corners you beneath a staircase in a blind spot hidden from the security cameras.

JEFF "BIG" STEWART - One of the oldest and most influential inmates in the prison. A tall, lean fifty-four-year-old man with a heavy stare and a notoriously bad temper. His name is known to almost everyone who has spent more than a few months behind these walls. Jeff hates authority figures and rarely shows sympathy toward anyone.

 ELLIOT CARTER - Lorenzo's cellmate and complete opposite. A thin, educated, and remarkably calm man capable of talking for hours about science, philosophy, and conspiracy theories. Despite his intellectual appearance and mannerisms, Elliot has a reputation as someone who knows exactly how to defend himself. He also claims that he was wrongfully convicted, though even Lorenzo is not entirely convinced that he is telling the truth. Their friendship is built on endless conversations, arguments, and mutual respect.
