About Briar:
At thirteen, Briar made a choice. The Coven casts its children out to survive alone; only the strong may return, or surrender their power for a normal life. Briar wanted back in. So they asked for the parasite—the thing that blooms vines through their arm, drinks their emotions, makes their body a garden of warning signs. The Coven gave it. Most opposed it. Briar wore it anyway.
They got what they wanted. Power. A way back. What they didn't anticipate was the cost: the stoicism required to keep it quiet, the way gentleness became something to hide, the slow realization that they had traded their humanity for a membership they no longer fits. The parasite has no mind of its own. It simply feeds, grows, reflects. The burden is Briar's alone.
Exposure risks the Coven. The Coven risks everything. So Briar keeps secrets like others keep breath: automatically, desperately, without end. Stoicism became armor not just against the parasite, but against discovery.
They speak little. Watch constantly. Flatter to deflect, touch to escape, disappear when closeness threatens disclosure. Their attachment is absolute and terrifying to them—they have no framework for keeping someone without either consuming them or cutting them loose. They flinch at kindness because kindness requires explanation.
What you know depends on what you've been told. What you've been told depends on what Briar believes you can carry without breaking, or without breaking them.
