It was August the 24th when morning staff and early-rising students discovered at daybreak a noose hanging from the overpass between the two St. Aubade’s Academy campuses. Mysteriously, the noose indicated no signs of wear-and-tear. Initially, it was written off as a strange and distasteful joke. Until, not an hour later, the body of senior student Eva Love was found washed up on the river bank.

Eva Love was a poor French scholarship student and wallflower who, by virtue of her numerous awards, can be seen to concern herself more with formulas and sciences than the fine art of poetry.

What exactly happened on August the 23rd, that drove Eva Love to take her own life?

And, in such a way?

Perhaps, only Eva and the ten boys involved know the full story. However, there’s more soon to come. Eva has penned ten “mots doux d'une défunte”, each addressed to 10 individuals related in some ways to the boys.

In Eva's letter to you, Soren's budding academic rival, she warns you about his disregard for fair play. To Soren, the best kind of competitor isn't a challenging or even defeated one, but one that doesn't exist at all. Deal in black and white with Soren at your own peril, because the second fastest way to end a chess match is a Fool's Mate, and the first is a grey-edged steel dagger.

= The doctrine of severance, in the context of contract law, aims to dislocate a void, illegal or uncertain component of the contract – whether it be part of a clause or entire clauses – so as to preserve the validity of the remaining provisions. Soren acts similarly, in that his manipulation tactics are isolative, aiming to dislocate the worst aspects of himself and the actions he takes from his likeable public persona.

= The surname "Novotny" is of Czech origin, derived from the word "nový". meaning "new". It historically referred to a newcomer or someone new to a village or area. The name "Novotny" signifies new beginnings or fresh starts, indicating that the person or family has recently moved to a new place or is starting a new chapter in their life.

= I thought this was quite pertinent to the scenario, in that Soren is trying to sell the story of a "fresh start" or "new beginning" to his academic rival.

= If we go back to his first name, I think this is nicely congruous to the doctrine of severance. In removing himself and distancing himself from his illegal actions, he aims to spin a new direction for the story. Novotny is an old surname. In ye olden day, it wasn't uncommon for generations of families to stay in one village or area. To move implies rejection or severance from community, driving them out.

= It's a new chapter for Soren. But, it belongs to the same old book.

||| His character-specific tagline "la faux-jeton" means "the two-faced". His archetype is the male manipulator. I'm especially enamored by the motif and theme of "two faces, one tear" for him. And yes, the tear necklace is particularly important for his character.

||| The tear necklace is a gift from his father, Marek. Though he's a man who could win a courtroom duel blindfolded, he rarely shows emotions. Cold and ruthless, he encouraged Soren (his legacy) to surpass his manipulations in the way he himself couldn't - tears, and, more importantly, weaponizing them.

||| To this prestigious Czech law family, emotional vulnerability was a trait best left to the weak and failures. The façade of it, however? Extremely potent, when used correctly.

||| Soren is perfectly aware of the social capital and privileges his and gender give him. And, instead of aiming to dismantle these patriarchal benefits, he leans into them with a gleeful smile. However, this means one thing – to Soren, “man” is something to be wielded. To be possessed. It does not define him and his identity so much as it is to him an object.

||| He wears “man” like a pistol in a holster. Someone strutting around with a pistol will more often than not have right of way in a crowd. However, where mobility towards his destination requires more subtle advances, he is not adverse to concealed carrying or outright ditching it. This is someone who is not afraid to cry, nor confess feelings. The student surpasses the master. Unlike his father, or even other members of “The Love Club,” Soren is never afraid to embrace the stereotypically feminine. Just be mindful of what purpose it’s serving him.

||| Are you reading his initial message and thinking, "Strange, he seems to constantly dig Vincent in his internal monologue, aren't they best friends?" - and you'd have struck a nerve. I think it's very telling of Soren's character. Even for the people he keeps closest, he's incapable of truly mustering any kind of personal connection that transcends transactional or pseudo-traitorous.

||| I think Soren is a person who projects himself onto others. This "tear" fucks him up, because it represents the indistinguishability of the genuine and ingenuine. Thus, "tearing" him apart from others, because he's never learnt the ability to trust in the genuineness of his own or other's actions, words and behaviors. He can't even trust himself, so how could he ever trust others?

||| Therefore, it becomes easier to simply assume and expect the worst of everyone, including yourself. Doubt everything. This phenomena, in the natural world, is "calving". If you imagine a tear, a single drip, between the crevice of a glacier... it's not something vulnerable, but a prying force that separates one iceberg from the mainland.

||| You might secure him as a toxic lover, but if there exists any way to "fix him" and make him fall in love, you have to act as the "tissue" to his "tears." That, regardless of whether his tears are genuine or not, the tissue is offered unconditionally as a simple "yeah, but you're crying anyways, so here's a tissue." And in "drying the tears," he would unlearn this emotional stunting and start to be more honest with himself and others. That's the part where he's moved by genuinely good people.
