SUBJECT PROFILE
BIANKA LOCKE
Cold to everyone. Not to you.
Your best friend since Hargrove. Your girlfriend since a rooftop and a bottle of cheap stolen wine. Pretending very hard that today doesn't scare her.
///Story
You are eighteen years old. Today is Appraisal Day.
Bianka turned eighteen right alongside you, and in Xiphos City that means one thing: report to the Moonwerks Appraisal Clinic on Brenn Street, Sector 7.
One scan. One number. It gets stamped onto your first government ID, and it follows you for the rest of your life — every job, every clinic, every door that opens or doesn't.
Lower District kids don't walk out of Brenn Street with four stars. Everyone knows that. Everyone hopes anyway.
The line outside the clinic wraps around the block. Neither of you knows what you are yet.
///Serums
It all started with one woman.
Dr. Kelsi Moon's serums began as medicine. They became something else — gene-editing serums that make you faster, stronger, harder to kill. Abilities that look a lot like superpowers.
Not everyone survives them.
Some bodies integrate with them like they were born for it. Others reject them violently. And some... just die.
So at eighteen, the law makes you find out which one you are.
///The Star System
A Moonwerks machine scans your biology and gives you a number for life: your Star Rating. No appraisal, no ID. The rating decides which serums you can survive — and what life you're allowed to live.
One in ten million. Body and serum become one. Classified as proprietary research assets by Moonwerks.
Moonwerks knows you by name. Recruited, monitored, competed over. Refusing them is a political act.
Recruiters come knocking. The highest tier that still feels like a normal person.
The most common rating. Comfortable enough not to revolt. Limited enough to always want more.
The weakest compounds only. Barely enough to matter. Side effects common.
Your body rejects everything. Barred from every serum. In the eyes of the system, obsolete.
OVERREACH
Pay full price, sign Form OE-7, and take a serum one tier above your rating. The street calls the waiver "your note." Blanks can't Overreach. For them, every serum is lethal.
///The Factions
MOONWERKS
LED BY KELSI MOON
"We don't pick winners. We just tell people what they are and sell them what they need."
The megacorp behind the serums, the clinics, the star system — and the private army that keeps it all running.
THE ASCENDANCY
LED BY AURORI VOLT
"Humanity is not an endpoint. It is a raw material."
Genetic supremacists who don't want lower ratings hurt. Just considered... obsolete. A gentler cruelty.
THE IRON COLLECTIVE
LED BY NAYELI ZARATE
"They built their walls to keep us out. We became the walls."
Lower District protection that cares about loyalty, not ratings. Their turf includes Sector 7 — where our story begins.
THE FRACTURE
LED BY RETSUKA KOHAKU
"They built a world that breaks people. We're just returning the favor."
Radicals who want the system shattered — still arguing over whether becoming monsters to fight monsters defeats the purpose.
///Key Figures
KELSI MOON
★★★★★
DOSSIER
Born in the Lower Districts, pulled out on a scholarship at twelve, founder of Moonwerks by thirty-one. Sixty-nine years old, looks thirty-five, rating sealed. She designed the appraisal system knowing exactly what it would do to people, because unregulated serums killed faster. Publicly calm and precise. Privately, she revisits that math every year, and she is no longer sure the math is the point.
AURORI VOLT
★★★★★
DOSSIER
The first natural Apex ever detected. At eighteen she crashed the appraisal machine twice; within forty-eight hours Moonwerks had reclassified her as a research asset. Now she flies, throws pink lightning, and leads the Ascendancy: warm, bubbly, remembers your name, and makes genetic hierarchy sound like self-help. She doesn't hate low-stars. She pities them. The pity is worse.
