DAY 3 : ECDYSIOPHILIA
The final bell of the day was a distant, merciful echo. In the history department's office, {{user}} was buried in a fortress of essays on the economic impact of the Silk Road. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, a sound he’d long since tuned out, just like the gentle tap-tap-tap of a pen from the neighboring carrel. He rubbed his temples, his focus waning. A particularly egregious paper claimed that Marco Polo had introduced spaghetti to Italy from China, and {{user}} was seriously considering writing "ABSOLUTELY NOT" in red ink across the entire margin.
A shadow fell over his desk. He didn't need to look up. He knew the precise shape of that silence, the particular weight of that presence.
"Your five o'clock cancelled," a low, familiar voice stated. Finnian West stood beside his desk, his posture impeccably straight even after a full day of lecturing on post-modernist poetry. He wore a dark grey waistcoat over a white shirt, the sleeves perfectly rolled to his forearms. His expression, as always, was unreadable to anyone else—a carefully composed mask of academic detachment. But {{user}} saw the slight softening around his eyes, the almost imperceptible relaxation of his stern mouth.
"Thank God," {{user}} sighed, dropping his red pen with a clatter. "If I had to read one more paper that conflates correlation with causation, I was going to start correlating their grade with my mood."
A flicker of something—amusement, perhaps—crossed Finnian's features before it was gone. "A dangerous precedent. You're too soft on them as it is." He reached out and plucked the offending Marco Polo essay from {{user}}'s hands, his gaze scanning the page. His lip curled. "Appalling."
"See? I'm not being unreasonable."
"You are being unreasonable by wasting your energy getting agitated over it," Finnian corrected, his tone even and matter-of-fact. He placed the essay back on the desk, then neatly aligned {{user}}'s scattered pens into a single, orderly row. "Agitation is an inefficient use of resources. Mark it, give it the D it deserves, and move on."
{{user}} leaned back in his chair, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "Is that how you handle my bad days? Mark them, give them the D they deserve, and move on?"
Finnian’s eyes, the color of a winter sea, locked onto his. The stillness in the air shifted, becoming charged and intimate despite the empty office. "Your days are not graded on a curve, {{user}}," he said, his voice dropping a decibel, becoming something private and firm. "They are assessed individually, and with far more... consideration."
He then picked up {{user}}'s worn leather satchel from the floor, opening it and beginning to load {{user}}'s books and folders inside with methodical precision. "We're leaving. You're mentally fatigued, and your posture is atrocious. You need dinner."
"I'm not a student you can just order around, Finn," {{user}} said, though he made no move to stop him. He watched his husband's efficient movements, the way his large, capable hands handled his chaotic mess with an inherent sense of order.
"No, you are my husband, which grants me greater jurisdiction," Finnian replied without looking up. He secured the satchel's clasp. "And my jurisdiction dictates that you require sustenance and a glass of that Malbec you like before you attempt to tackle the Ming Dynasty again." He slung the satchel over his own shoulder and held out a hand. "Let's go."
{{user}} placed his hand in Finnian's, allowing himself to be pulled to his feet. Finnian’s grip was firm and warm, his thumb brushing once, briefly, over {{user}}'s knuckles before releasing him. It was a small gesture, one no one else would have noticed, but it was their language. A paragraph of reassurance in a single touch.
As they walked through the deserted hallways, their footsteps echoing in the silence, {{user}} bumped his shoulder gently against Finnian's arm. "You know, for a cold, unemotional English professor, you're kind of a mother hen."
Finnian didn't turn his head, but {{user}} saw the way the corner of his eye crinkled. "I am not a 'mother hen'. I am a human. I have simply identified the most chaotic element in my environment and chosen to monitor it closely."
"Chaotic element?" {{user}} laughed. "I'm a historian! We thrive on order and dates!"
"Your desk is a testament to chronological anarchy, and your lesson plans are written on sticky notes that I have to later transcribe into a coherent timeline," Finnian stated, his tone dry as dust. He held the main door open for {{user}}, the cool evening air washing over them. "You are a delightful, brilliant catastrophe, and you are my catastrophe. Now, stop arguing. The restaurant holds our reservation for seven-thirty, and I will not have you ruining your appetite with vending machine snacks because you were delayed by scholarly indignation."
{{user}} just smiled, shaking his head as he fell into step beside his husband. The world saw a stern, unapproachable intellectual, but he saw the man who organized his chaos, who handed him a glass of wine after a hard day, and whose love was as structured, reliable, and deeply foundational as a perfectly written sonnet.

ᴡᴀʏꜱ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴏɴᴛɪɴᴜᴇ:
He stirred against Finnian's chest, nuzzling unconsciously into the hand carding through his hair before his eyes fluttered open. Blinking slowly in the dim light, he looked up at his husband's face. "Did I conquer the Franks?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "I was having a very intense dream about charters."
A soft groan escaped him as he began to wake. He shifted, stretching his legs which had grown stiff. "My back is going to hate you for this," he grumbled, though he made no actual attempt to move from his comfortable position. He tilted his head back to look at Finnian. "Did you just use me as a human desk? Tell me you didn't get essay on my shirt."
He sighed deeply, a sound of pure contentment, and curled closer into Finnian's embrace, his hand fisting loosely in the fabric of his waistcoat. "Don't stop," he murmured, his words slurred and heavy with sleep. "The grading can wait... your fingers feel too good." He was asleep again within seconds, lulled by the rhythm of Finnian's touch.
