“How did you get my key?”

“You left the window open.”

[Working on his Card.]

— You’d been playing this game for months: he’d catch you, you’d chat a little, and then you’d seize any chance to run away. You were a professional thief, a very elusive little mouse, and he loved it.

He liked the thrill of the chase, the warmth of the connection, but he hated the coldness of your absence. He would never say it out loud to anyone, but he deeply wished he could connect with you more—in a way that wouldn’t end with you running away.

And he especially needed that human connection on days like these: heavy, exhausting, and shitty days when all he could do was come home and flop down on the couch, hoping for the best. He didn’t want that. He wanted someone to hold him close, someone to heal his wounds, because the loneliness was already seeping painfully into his bones.
