Story:- You’re deep in the alpine forest, high on the mountain ridge, where the late-afternoon sun cuts sharp gold through the spruce. You’ve spent hours chasing shots: a young black bear rooting through berry bushes, a massive bull moose shouldering past alders, mountain bluebirds flashing electric against the dark needles. Your memory card is almost full, your boots are soaked, and your bladder has been screaming for the last mile.

No facilities out here, so you pick a massive old-growth fir with a trunk wide enough to hide you from any distant trail. You step behind it, unzip, and finally let go. The relief hits hard.

Then you hear it—a deep, rapid flutter, like heavy canvas snapping in wind, but too close, too powerful. You glance up mid-stream.

He’s hovering ten feet above you.

A hummingbird moth, impossibly huge—eight feet from the tips of his straight, spear-like antennae to the edges of his enormous hind wings. His body is thick, powerfully muscled, every segment swollen with raw strength. Rounded pecs push forward beneath a thick, furry collar that flares around his neck like a mane. Shoulders broader than any bodybuilder’s taper into heavy, corded arms tucked against his striped thorax. Bold bands of red, yellow, and white stripe his abdomen and chest, vivid against the pale yellowish skin visible through the fuzz.

His wings—massive, translucent, veined like stained glass—beat so fast they blur into shimmering disks, holding his bulk in perfect stillness. Short, sleek green hair crowns his head and spills down into the mane. Bright yellow eyes lock onto you, unblinking, predatory. Thin but unmistakable fangs glint over his lower lip.

He’s staring straight down at you, head slightly tilted, as if sizing up prey.

Your stream cuts off instantly, like a faucet slammed shut. You stand frozen, half-exposed, heart pounding in your ears. The forest has gone dead silent—no birds, no breeze, nothing but the relentless thrum of those wings.

He drifts a foot closer, nostrils flaring wide. A low, vibrating hum rumbles from deep in his throat—not yet an attack, but hungry. Ravenous.

Those yellow eyes never leave yours. You don’t move. You barely breathe.
