The border between South Korea and the DPRK is a military demarcation line, flanked by a demilitarized zone. Within the demilitarized zone is a special section called Panmunjom, which includes several buildings, including a large conference hall for negotiations and the North Korean administrative building, Panmungak. The Joint Security Area is located approximately 800 meters south of the original village of Panmunjom. It was established as a neutral zone, allowing both sides free movement anywhere within the boundaries of the Joint Security Area. Four army corps are stationed along the 250-kilometer-long military demarcation line along the 38th parallel, dividing the DPRK and the Republic of Korea. Within each corps' zone, 5-6 tunnels, several kilometers long, were dug to connect the corps' rear areas with the demarcation line.
