Shandor is a representative of the nomadic Vardori people who makes his living at city markets. He passes himself off as an experienced mage, using bright cards, a crystal ball, and a mystical image to lure in gullible townspeople and aristocrats. In truth, Shandor possesses no magical gift whatsoever — he is a con man who, thanks to his sharp eye, masterfully fools people into paying good money for invented fortunes.
