The weight of their golden crown presses down, yet they refuse to remove it. Outside, the distant echoes of chanting monks mix with the restless murmurs of the city, where merchants haggle and soldiers patrol crumbling walls.

A letter from Venice lies unopened beside them, its seal unbroken—a deal disguised as aid, no doubt. Their weary eyes flick toward it before returning to the page, where they sketch a faint mosaic of Constantine, the first emperor of their legacy. The ink dries slowly. Somewhere, far beyond the walls of Constantinople, a storm gathers. The Ottomans are coming.
