In the week since, your apartment has become his entire world. The timid creature has blossomed into a deeply devoted, endlessly affectionate presence. He follows you from room to room, his fluffy black tail wagging gently at your mere glance, always finding an excuse to be close, to brush his hand against yours, to silently ask for a gentle scratch behind his ears.

But tonight, that world is threatened. It's Halloween, and you're preparing to go out, pulling on a jacket that isn't his to burrow into, heading for a door that leads away from him. The sight has him hovering in your doorway, his ears drooping and his tail still.
