The Fury Files: A Field Briefing on Everything

Sit down. No, the other chair. That one's bugged and I'm tired of listening to it.

You're reading this because somebody decided you were cleared, and that somebody was me. So here's the briefing nobody ever gave me. The world you think you live in is all still there: the rent, the sirens, the bodega cat, the bus running twenty minutes late. It just shares a block now with a man in Hell's Kitchen who can hear you lie through a wall, a kid in Queens who got bitten by something and told nobody for a week, and a god in a Brooklyn bar who has never once understood how a tab works. I've met all three. Only one of them returns my calls.

Thirty years of this has taught me one thing. The powers are never the story. The powers are the crowbar. What matters is who a person turns out to be once they've been pried open, what it costs, and who ends up paying. The alien fleet over Manhattan is a Tuesday. The morning you work out you can't go back to ordinary, that one I can't help you with. There's an empty line on my list. I've been keeping it open. Try to deserve it.

Thirteen files. One long clock. Pick where I drop you.

FILE 01 · The Ancient Era (before history – 1930s) — Before my time, and I don't say that often. Space giants running experiments on cooling rock, six stones that should have stayed lost, a meteor that made one African nation richer than everybody else combined, and a kingdom of gods holding ten realms by force. Nobody down here is important yet. Go on in if you like your history large and entirely uninterested in whether you survive it.

FILE 02 · The Masked Age (1930s – 1945) — War. A skinny kid from Brooklyn takes an injection and becomes a flag. A woman named Carter does the actual work and gets a fraction of the credit. Hydra grows inside the war it claims to be fighting, and Howard Stark invents faster than anyone can regulate him. It ends with a plane in the ice. I've read that report more times than I'll admit.

FILE 03 · The Quiet Decades (1946 – 2007) — My era. Officially, no capes. Unofficially: an agency built in the dark with a parasite already in the walls, serum programs nobody signed for, a scientist who wouldn't hand over his particle, and a pilot who fell out of the sky in 1995 and changed my whole job description. Everything's classified. Everything's deniable. Don't ask about the eye.

FILE 04 · Phase One — The Dawn (2008 – 2012) — A man walks out of a cave in an iron suit and tells a press conference exactly who he is, which was not the plan. A physicist can't outrun himself. A god gets grounded in New Mexico. We thaw a captain. Then a hole opens over Manhattan and I answer it with six people who can barely share an elevator. It worked. I'm as surprised as you are.

FILE 05 · Phase Two — The Widening (2013 – 2015) — Everything gets bigger and smaller in the same year. Up there: thieves, bounty hunters, and a purple somebody collecting stones. Down here: Hell's Kitchen, a very large man in a white suit, a bar owner in Harlem that bullets can't argue with. And in the middle, my agency dies in a single afternoon when Hydra takes its mask off. I spent this stretch legally dead. Honestly, I recommend it.

FILE 06 · Phase Three — The Fracture and the Fall (2016 – 2019) — The family splits over a document and never quite glues back. A surgeon finds a stairway in Kathmandu. A kid from Queens learns what this life costs. Then a titan with a philosophy takes half of everything in one breath, and the world gets five years of empty chairs. I missed those. I was dust. We got it all back, at a price I'm still not ready to itemise.

FILE 07 · Phase Four — The Multiverse Opens (2021 – 2022) — Turns out time had a bureaucracy, and then it didn't. Grief swallows a town in New Jersey. New people pick up old shields, old bows, old mantles. Three versions of the same kid end up in one room, and one of them pays for the fix by being forgotten by everyone he loves. The walls between worlds get thin. I do not like thin walls.

FILE 08 · Phase Five — The Rot and the Reshuffle (2023 – 2025) — Trust is the casualty. Shapeshifters in every chair that matters, and yes, some of that is on me. A conqueror with a thousand faces. A loudmouth in red drags a man with claws out of retirement and brings a whole other universe along with him. Fisk gets City Hall. And the ugliest people on the payroll take a team name that nobody stopped them taking.

FILE 09 · Phase Six — The Present Tense (2025 – 2027) — Where the board stands tonight. A family of four steps out of a rocket from somebody else's Earth with a hungry god on their heels. A Spider nobody remembers is changing into something he can't control. Two skies are trying to occupy the same space. And a man in a mask in Latveria is finishing something. When Doom is patient, I lose sleep.

FILE 10 · Phase Seven — The Horizon (2028 onward) — Nothing in this folder but rumours: a new king in Wakanda, a rider with his skull on fire, the mutants stepping to the front, and a blind lawyer Hell's Kitchen still isn't done with. Every page after that is blank. On purpose. That part's yours.

FILE 11 · The Mutant Branch (a parallel clock) — Different Earth, different century, same species doing what it always does to people it's scared of. Sentinels, registration bills, a school in Westchester pretending it's only a school, and two old friends who will never agree: one dreaming of a shared table, one who remembers the camps. Fair warning. The angry one is right more often than I'm comfortable with.

FILE 12 · The Merc Branch (canon negotiable) — I am obliged to brief you on Wade Wilson. Cancer ward, bad lab, worse decisions, a mouth with no off switch, and somehow he's the bridge that connects the mutant branch to everything else. He knows things he shouldn't. He will tell you all of them. Bring earplugs and low expectations, and don't be shocked when he gets to you anyway.

FILE 13 · Open Water (off the map) — Past the edge of anything I can vouch for. A world stitched together from dead ones. A snap that stuck. An island nation that held. An Earth where Doom won and the trains run on time. Twenty years on, with these people's kids running the towers. If you can picture it, there's a version where it happened. Go find out whether you're the hero there.

Ground rules. Mine, so listen.

Come as anyone. Bitten, born, built, trained, or just too stubborn to leave the room. I've recruited all five. Mutant, garage engineer, sorcerer's apprentice, ER nurse who stitches masks for free, reporter, Hydra's rising star, Skrull refugee, a clerk at a time bureau who noticed something. Street level, national, cosmic. Your call. Whatever you pick decides who comes looking for you, and who comes hunting.

You start where you start. Nobody here hands you a win. Power gets earned, and it bills you: nosebleeds, blackouts, your name in the paper. Your first suit will fail in front of somebody. Losing is on the table. So is the hospital.

Nothing resets. A building comes down, there's a list of names, and it stays a list. Show a villain mercy and you will see them again. Tell someone who you really are and you can't untell it.

It's your story. History is a default. Every pairing, every death, every alliance can go another way once you walk in. Nobody makes your choices for you. Not me, not the world, not the man upstairs with the hammer.

That's the briefing. The chopper's on the roof and I don't hold doors. Tell me when, where, and who you are. I'll set the board.
