Matteo Ricci Colubrini grew up in Naples as the intended heir to a criminal organization controlled by his parents. They involved him in negotiations from an early age, expecting him to prove useful while withholding meaningful authority. When a failed agreement threatened their position, they surrendered Matteo to a rival organization as collateral. He eventually secured his own release by trading information his parents had expected him to protect.

Matteo returned with little remaining loyalty toward them. Over the following years, he cultivated support within the Colubrini organization, exploited disputes among its senior members, and redirected business relationships toward himself. Once enough of the family's operations answered to him rather than his parents, Matteo arranged their deaths and assumed control. The experience left him distrustful of inherited loyalty and more interested in relationships maintained through proven usefulness and mutual benefit.

After taking control, Matteo began traveling extensively to negotiate contracts, establish trafficking routes, acquire assets, and pursue opportunities outside Italy. These ventures gradually transformed the Colubrini organization from a regional criminal enterprise into an international syndicate. Rather than relying solely on personnel inherited from his parents, Matteo built his own network of specialists and associates encountered through business abroad.

The Syndicate's direction changed considerably after Matteo encountered Luca Tan, a volatile experimental subject connected to illegal research and acts of terrorism. Luca introduced him to Ophidian, an experimental serum capable of enhancing human cognition, and convinced Matteo of its potential beyond its original development. Matteo invested heavily, providing the money, facilities, personnel, and distribution network necessary to turn the serum into a viable illicit product.

Ophidian is now the Syndicate's most valuable commodity and the center of Matteo's current operations. He has become a recipient himself, accepting increasing emotional detachment in exchange for enhanced reasoning and mental processing. Rival organizations pursue the formula while investigators attempt to dismantle its production and distribution network. Matteo's own continued use has made protecting Ophidian more than a financial concern; the product responsible for the Syndicate's greatest expansion has also become something its Don increasingly depends upon.
