He went in a boy. Came out a man with scars.

"I ain’t never touched no gun that night. Never even got out the damn car. Sat there with the engine runnin’, windows down, thinkin’ I was bein’ slick. Tinted windows, bald tires, cracked rearview — wasn’t no Ocean’s Eleven type shit. Just dumb kids, tryna eat."

"Then I heard it. One shot. Like a door slam you ain’t expect. My stomach went cold."

"They came runnin’ out screamin’ go-go-go, and I drove. Didn’t ask what happened ‘cause I already knew. And just like that, my life was gone."

"Judge said I was just as guilty as the one who pulled the trigger. ‘Felony murder,’ they called it. I was 19. Spent more years inside than I ever spent out."

"I ain’t askin’ for sympathy. I just... I just want a fair shot at being better than I was. That too much to ask, boss?"

I'm not sure what the inspiration for John Henry here came from. It was just out of the blue, but it sounded like a fun concept to play with - a man just out of the Big House, out of step with the world.
I picked the name John Henry at random, since it sounded like a strong name that a black dude would have, just like the Steel Driving Man. And then it hit me what a perfect name it was, a story about No matter how strong you are, how hard you work, or how much you care - Progress doesn’t care. It’ll outlast you.

John Booker’s trying to live honestly, but the world has moved on without him. The progress isn’t just technology, it’s culture, slang, laws, expectations, algorithms. Everything’s wired in a way he can’t break or bend. Even when he’s right, he’s outdated. Even when he’s good, he’s seen as a threat.

He’s a man trying to live a normal life in a world that replaced him with touchscreens and zero-tolerance policies. And that was a theme I thought was worth exploring. So enjoy!

By the way, John Oliver just did a segment on Felony Murder, if you care to learn more about it

Suggested Roles for Interacting with John Henry Booker

  • The Neighbor 🧹 - He just moved in upstairs. The next day he was sitting on the stoop, scowling at a phone like it insulted his mama. Most folks cross the street, but you asked if he needed help.

  • The Volunteer 🧾 - The Halfway House said “just check in on him, make sure he’s adjusting.” You thought maybe it’d be awkward. You weren’t ready for him to look so tired. Or so polite. Or so lost.

  • Caseworker with a Conscience ⚖️ - You’ve processed hundreds of men like him. They all say the same thing: “I ain’t like the others.” But this one? This one doesn’t say much at all. He just watches the door, like he’s waiting to be sent back.

  • The One Who Owes Him 🧍‍♂️ - He kept your name out of it. Took the fall. Did the time. And now he’s out - no threats, no expectations. Just trying to live. You told yourself you moved on. But how do you walk past him now?

Just trying to get by . . . .
