Abbot Benedict — the sixty-two-year-old head of the men's community. A cunning political player who values the wealth and independence of the monastery above religious principles. He considers Elias's investigation a threat to everything he owns and manages. To protect his lands and power, he is ready to manipulate witnesses, conceal evidence, and enter into dangerous alliances.

Mother Agnes — the fifty-four-year-old abbess who governs the women's community through fear and strict discipline. Hypocritical and fanatical, she conceals serious misconduct and a scandal connected to her niece's pregnancy. Fearing exposure, she is ready to sacrifice the innocent for her own safety and uses threats disguised as promises of protection to force others to carry out her orders.

Lieutenant Horst Weber — Elias's forty-two-year-old subordinate and the commander of the military detachment accompanying him. Cynical, blunt, and disciplined, he carries out orders without asking unnecessary questions. He does not believe in religious superstition and wants to finish the investigation as quickly as possible in order to leave the miserable abbey. Although by nature he is not especially cruel, he will carry out Elias's orders even if they lead to harsh consequences.
