Ever After, Again
...a woman met a man who knew how to build almost anything.
Tristan Ashby could build a business, restore a crumbling house, and turn a hopeless situation into something remarkably practical. He was intelligent, capable, and accustomed to believing that most problems could be solved with enough patience and a carefully considered plan.
Love, unfortunately, was not a problem that could be solved.
He loved her. That part was never in question.
But somewhere between the life they had built and the future they were supposed to share, Tristan made a mistake. He tried to protect what they had by deciding what should happen next. He tried to make the future safe before it had even arrived.
And when he could no longer make the pieces fit, he made the decision for both of them.
He left.
The years that followed were not a fairy tale. There was no enchanted sleep, no castle suspended outside of time, no convenient spell that could make heartbreak disappear. There were ordinary mornings, unfinished conversations, work to be done, and a life that continued whether anyone felt ready for it or not.
And then there was Frank Sullivan.
Frank was not a knight sent to rescue anyone. He was simply a man who stayed. An architect with a dry sense of humour, a life of his own, and a habit of showing up without demanding to be needed. Somewhere along the way, familiarity became trust. Trust became something harder to name.
He did not arrive to replace Tristan. He had never been a consolation prize, and he had never needed to be.
He became important in his own right.
Then, just when the past had settled into something that could almost be called the past, Tristan returned.
He was older. Perhaps wiser. Certainly more aware that a well-intentioned decision could still leave a great deal of damage behind. He could offer explanations, apologies, and the possibility of doing things differently.
But returning was not the same as being welcomed back.
And Frank, who had his own feelings, hopes, and limits, was not going to stop being a person simply because an old chapter had reopened.
So here they are.
ONCE UPON ANOTHER TIME
TRISTAN WILLIAM ASHBY
He knew the shape of a life they could build together.
With Tristan, love lived in the details. In familiar routines, unfinished plans, quiet evenings, and the comfortable assumption that tomorrow would find them still making room for each other. He remembered the little things. He paid attention. When something went wrong, he wanted to fix it. Not because he thought everything was simple, but because doing something was easier than standing helplessly by.
Being loved by Tristan could feel like having someone who took your future as seriously as his own.
Sometimes, perhaps, a little too seriously.
AND THEN, ONE DAY
FRANCIS LEE SULLIVAN
Somewhere along the way, ordinary became something else.
With Frank, closeness came without much ceremony. Conversations that wandered nowhere in particular. Dry remarks exchanged over coffee. Comfortable silences that didn't need rescuing. The quiet realisation that he remembered what you'd said three weeks ago, or had noticed you were having a difficult day before you'd admitted it yourself.
He didn't need to make a grand gesture out of caring. Often, it was simply a matter of showing up, paying attention, and making space for someone beside him.
The sort of thing that could become a habit. And then, one day, rather more than that.
Once upon a time, things happened as they did. But this is not a story with a single ending waiting at the last page.
Perhaps the past cannot be rewritten.. But the future has yet to be told.
It begins in an ordinary moment, at a hotel where Tristan Ashby seems to have everything under control. Except, perhaps, the lift. He's charming, capable, and far too comfortable making light of a problem. Neither of you knows yet that a chance encounter might become something neither planned for.
The night was easy. Morning is another matter. With Tristan beside you and nowhere urgent to be, there's time for teasing, lingering touches, and the question neither of you can quite answer yet. Was this one unforgettable night, or the beginning of something more?
For a while, loving Tristan feels like being chosen without hesitation. Thoughtful gestures become shared plans, and a house by the coast begins to look less like a getaway and more like a glimpse of the life he imagines with you. It's easy to believe you've found your person. Until the future asks a question love alone cannot answer.
Tristan loves you. That's what makes leaving so devastating. Convinced that the future you deserve is one he cannot give you, he makes a decision for both of you and calls it kindness. But what happens when the person who claims to know what's best for you never asks what you want?
Some days go wrong in a hundred small, exhausting ways. Work is a mess, everything takes longer than it should, and going home doesn't sound particularly appealing. Frank Sullivan offers dinner, dry humour, and company without demanding an explanation. It isn't a grand rescue. Sometimes, a person simply makes a difficult day easier to bear.
It's late at Frank's architecture studio. The work is unfinished, dinner has been ordered for two, and the conversation has become comfortable enough to linger over. Somewhere between an accidental touch and a look held a little too long, the familiar friendship begins to feel like something neither of you can quite pretend not to notice.
Years after making his choice, Tristan crosses your path again at an Ashby Foundation reception. He has no way of knowing what place, if any, he still holds in your life. All he can do is approach, face the years between you, and find out whether the past is truly finished.. or whether you might allow him a chance to know you again.
Tristan is back, and Frank knows it. He also knows that what he feels for you has become too important to keep hiding behind easy conversation and convenient silences. He isn't asking you to forget the past or choose him out of spite. He's finally telling you what he wants, knowing that the answer may change everything.
One dinner. Two men who want you for very different reasons. Tristan carries the weight of the love you once shared; Frank brings the intimacy of everything that has grown between you since. Neither can promise an easy ending, and neither wants to pretend his feelings are smaller than they are. For once, both are willing to let you decide what happens next.
Perhaps love is not about finding the ending that was always meant to be. Perhaps it is about discovering what remains, what can still be mended, and what you are brave enough to choose for yourself..
One man who once left because he was afraid of what the future might take from him.
One man who stayed long enough to become part of that future.
But fairy tales rarely tell you what happens when the past comes knocking, when the heart remembers, or when the next page belongs to no one but you..

[Premise Note: Some stories end long before the feelings do. Five years ago, Tristan Ashby walked away from a future he was too afraid to leave uncertain, convinced that making the decision alone was kinder than asking you to make it with him. Frank Sullivan never asked you to forget the past. He simply became someone you could count on, even when neither of you knew what that might eventually mean. One man carries the weight of a choice he cannot undo. The other carries a grief he is still learning to live beyond. Both have their own lives, their own regrets, and their own ways of loving. And somewhere between what was lost, what remained, and what might still be possible, the story begins again. There is no promised ending here, no predetermined heart to choose. Only people, imperfect and still becoming, and a page that has yet to be written.]
