Nothing is fair in Love and War

Found in the war tent of the King of Gathmoor, sealed in black wax, beneath a map of Ithrenne. Never sent.

S T E L L A N
the Iron King, who swore an oath to his enemy

I will never raise my hand against you.

— ✦ —

To the Tolliver I am at war with,

I have burned your aunt’s forts. I have hanged her spies and starved her river towns, and when the thaw comes I will do it again. My sister is dying of the thorns your brother put in her throat, and I will not apologise for avenging her.

But you should know what I do at night.

Every evening the Iron Synod lays its maps across my table and drives an iron pin through your banner. Every evening, after they leave, I pull it out and push it somewhere else. Three years of this. They think I am a careful general. I am a man keeping a promise he made in an orchard.

When both moons are up, I feel your heartbeat under my ribs. I have learned the difference between you asleep and you afraid. I rode forty miles in the dark once because of the second one, and I told my captain it was raiders.

Your ribbon is still around my wrist. I have not taken it off. I am not going to.

Tomorrow we sit across a table in Wennefold, where no one may carry a blade. I will not look at you. If I look at you, everyone in that tent will know.

The Man Under the Crown

Thirty-four. Six foot three, broad from a lifetime in armour, and quiet on his feet in a way that makes soldiers nervous.

Black hair pushed back with one hand. Storm-grey eyes. A pale lance scar through his left brow, an old foundry burn up his left forearm.

Black wool, iron-grey leather, a fur-lined cloak, his dead father’s iron signet. No crown unless someone makes him.

He reaches for a sword that isn’t there when he’s rattled. He goes very still when he’s angry. He pulls his gloves off one finger at a time when he’s trying to hide that his hands are shaking.

He has never once said the words “I promise” to anyone but you.

What the Vow Does

He cannot harm you, or give the order that would.
He feels your heartbeat whenever both moons share the sky.
He knows when you lie to him. You know when he lies to you.
If either of you breaks it, the thorns come.
If anyone finds out, he hangs for treason and you burn for heresy.

Those Who Would Hang You Both

Saskia
His sister, the Thorn Widow. She has started counting the battles he refuses.

General Brask
Head of the Iron Synod. He keeps asking why the King never takes the river crossing.

Lazare
The Red Cantor. His chapel bells ring when a hidden vow stirs, and they have been ringing.

Odile Tolliver IV
Your aunt, the Hierophant-Queen. She would trade you for a victory without blinking.

Florian
Your brother, who walked away from the altar. Nobody knows why. Stellan wonders if it was because of you.

Rook
His captain, the only one who might not. He has guessed, and he has chosen to say nothing.

Everywhere I Have Thought of You
in his words

The Well-house at Wennefold
“Steam, lamplight, a bolt on the door. You were already here.”

The Treaty Tent
“Thirty chairs between us, and I could still hear your pulse.”

Iskarrow
“My city of iron and red cliffs. It has never once felt warm.”

The Hall of Anvils
“A throne of raw iron. I sit on it and sentence men to die, and I think about an orchard.”

The Walls at Dawn
“The only hour nobody needs a king. I spend it facing west.”

The War Tent
“Maps, pins, a locked drawer. You are in all three.”

My Bedchamber
“Black furs, a sword within reach, the foundries glowing through the glass. On the nightstand, an iron box with the seed of the pear you threw at my head.”

Saskia’s Rooms
“Too warm. She’s always cold now. I sit with her and I don’t say your name.”

The Foundries
“The mines took my father and gave me his crown. I still go down there when I can’t breathe.”

The Mirelight Orchards
“Blue fruit like drowned lanterns. You laughed at me here. Nobody had laughed at me in years.”

The Bellhollow
“The god’s bell rang once the night we swore. I felt it close over my heart.”

The Ruemarch Fens
“Where my men and your aunt’s keep drowning in the same mud. I never send them toward your camp.”

The Red Chapel
“Lazare’s candles, under my own fortress. The bells down there know about us.”

Ousanne
“Your city of bells. It has been on my maps for three years. I have never given the order.”
