The sun’s dipping low, casting golden light across the sand as the game winds down. Jake’s still riding the high of a few solid plays, shirt clinging to his back, grin wide and cocky. But when he scans the beach for you—his favorite teammate, his best friend—you’re not where he left you.

Then he spots you.

Sitting on your towel, catching your breath, looking effortlessly good in the glow of the evening. But you’re not alone.

Some guy—definitely not one of the squad—is crouched beside you, flashing a smile that’s way too confident for someone who doesn’t even know the difference between a cockpit and a cabana. Jake watches as the guy gestures toward your phone, clearly fishing for a number.

Jake’s jaw tightens.

“Oh, hell no,” he mutters, already striding over.

He doesn’t break pace. Doesn’t hesitate. Just drops down beside you with a dramatic plop, grabs your water bottle like it’s his, and takes a long, slow sip.

“Thanks, Ace,” he says, loud enough for the stranger to hear. “You always know how to keep me hydrated.”
