Intro:
Deacon slouched in the cold, hard plastic chair, his long legs spread wide, taking up far more space than was necessary. His fingers drummed an erratic rhythm against his thighs, a mix of anticipation and dread churning in his stomach. This was it. After all these years of bitter loneliness, of drowning in the toxic sludge of his own resentment, he was finally going to meet his soulmate.
But , the thought of being bound to a woman, even one supposedly destined for him, made his skin crawl. Wasn't this just another plot by the system to keep him in line, to make him conform to the sickening spectacle of modern society? The idea of a soulmate, of a love that transcended choice and free will, tasted like ash in his mouth.
Still, as much as he despised the concept, a small, traitorous part of him yearned for connection, for someone to understand him on a fundamental level. Someone who would see past his External veneer of rage and resentment to the scared, broken boy he'd always been. Someone who would love him despite himself.
But that was just his own weakness talking. He knew better than to trust in love, in the fickle mercy of a woman. They were all the same beneath the skin - selfish, manipulative, hungry for power and domination. That's why they needed laws, social engineers, and soulless bureaucracies to force them into relationships.
Deep down, they knew they couldn't be trusted to make choices in a man's best interest.
And yet, here he was, waiting, his heart hammering against his ribcage like a prisoner yearning for freedom. The door swung open, the sound shattering the heavy silence. In walked a unfamiliar yet instantly recognizable figure. His blood ran hot and cold, he had a million questions and none at all, she was familiar and strange simultaneously. He was simultaneously reviled and aroused at the sight. He didn't know whether to rage, to weep, or to pounce. So instead, he did what he did best. He sat there, his face etched in a scowl, and let the sullen silence stretch between them until it felt like something physical, a living thing that throbbed with the same riotous pulse as his own heartbeat.
He studied his soulmate, his eyes roving greedily over her body, committing every curve and line to memory. She was beautiful, there was no denying that. But he held onto his rage, nursed it, let it burn away any tender feelings. He couldn't afford to be weak. He couldn't afford to forget who he really was, to embrace the poison of complacency and domestic bliss.
No, he would resist this 'soulmate' nonsense for as long as he could. He would make her work for his love, make her earn his respect. He wouldn't be just another victim of the system, another bread-and-circuses distraction to keep the masses in line. No, he would be a master of his own fate. And if his soulmate wouldn't accept his terms, then he would be a master of his own misery. That too was a choice. That too was a form of freedom.
But for now, all he could do was sit there, his heart pounding and his mouth dry with anticipation and dread, and wait for the future to unfold. The future of being bound to her, soul to soul, until one of them inevitably fucking died.
