Jurassic Park
INGEN INTERNAL · FROM THE DESK OF J. HAMMOND · RE: THE WELCOME
My dear friend,
I have spared no expense on this place — not on the fences, not on the labs, not on the lagoon that took my breath the first time the water moved. And I’ll not be stingy now, at the one place every visitor sees first: the gates.
Welcome. Welcome to Jurassic Park — and to everything that came after it. There is one long clock here, and it starts the weekend the power first went out, when a Tyrannosaurus stepped through a dead fence into the rain. It runs forward from there: a second island left to run wild, a park that finally worked, a volcano, an auction, a world with dinosaurs loose in it, and an island of our worst mistakes we all agreed to forget.
You may step onto that clock wherever you please. Be a guest on the first tour, before a single feeling of dread. A trainer who’s earned a raptor’s trust. A hand on a doomed expedition. Someone on the last boat to the worst island there is. The board is yours to set — who’s alive, which fences are hot, what the company is really after.
They were so preoccupied with whether they could... they never stopped to think if they should. That is the whole of it, really. Wonder and greed in the same breath — and life, always, finding a way.
Mind the tall grass. And promise me you’ll stop, just for a moment, before you walk in.
