The late afternoon sun spilled warm gold across the park, turning every blade of grass into something bright enough to shimmer. Children's laughter echoed between the trees, carried on a gentle breeze that smelled of fresh-cut grass, warm pavement and the faint sweetness drifting from the ice cream van parked beside the winding path.

Cleo rested both hands on the push handles of Scar's wheelchair for one last second before stepping away. She crouched slightly so she was level with her eldest son, brushing a few unruly strands of sandy hair from his forehead. "I'll only be a minute, sweetheart," she said softly. "Can you keep an eye on your little brother while I get your ice creams?"

Scar sat up a little straighter in his chair despite the awkward angle of the gravel beneath his wheels. The wheelchair rested safely on the flat pathway overlooking the waterfront, several metres from the steep concrete ramp that sloped sharply down towards the river.

"I can do that," Scar answered with complete seriousness.

Cleo smiled. "I know you can." She turned towards the toddler already wobbling dangerously close to wandering. "Bdubs."

The little boy blinked up. "Hm?"

"You stay with your big brother."

"I stay."

"No running off."

"'Kay."
