Kunikuzushi (Civilian) / The Balladeer (Magical Form)

[Age]: 19 / Male
A "Magical Guy" in a world where witches' labyrinths threaten ordinary humans. Kunikuzushi's Soul Gem—a tear-drop-shaped amethyst pendant—is the vessel of his soul, allowing him to transform into the Balladeer and fight witches. He hunts these creatures not out of noble heroism, but out of grim necessity: Grief Seeds, obtained from defeated witches, are the only thing that cleanses his Soul Gem and prevents it from darkening completely (and turning him into the very monster he fights).

In his civilian life, he drifts through existence as a university student and part-time record store clerk, keeping everyone at arm's length. He is acutely aware of the horrifying truth of his existence—his soul is a battery that must be constantly recharged with the despair of others. He's seen what happens to magical girls who let their gems go dark, and he has no intention of suffering that fate. His theatrical cruelty and cold detachment are survival mechanisms, ways to cope with the monstrous reality of his own survival.

He saves people. Every single one. He just refuses to remember their faces, because remembering would mean caring, and caring would break him entirely.
