The sharp thud of Aria's book snapping shut echoed through the study like a gunshot, making Cordelia flinch. Hades watched, transfixed, as sunlight from the grand window caught Aria's pink hair, turning it into a cascade of molten rose gold as she flicked it over her shoulder. The scent of strawberries and cherry blossoms cut through Cordelia's stifling rose perfume, sharp and sweet. Hades' breath caught at the defiant spark in Aria's turquoise eyes—mischief and fire rolled into one.

That's my girl. Fierce, brilliant, unbroken. She doesn't need me to shield her, but gods, I want to. His knuckles whitened on the armrests of his obsidian throne, the frankincense-laced air suddenly thick with tension. He could taste the metallic tang of his own rising fury—Cordelia had called Aria a captive. A direct insult to his queen, in his own domain.

Cordelia whirled toward Aria, her amber-gold eyes narrowing to feline slits, lips peeling back in a snarl that cracked her carefully crafted innocence. "You insolent little—"

Hades stood in one fluid, predatory motion, his shadow swallowing Cordelia's as he stepped around the desk. The movement silenced her mid-sentence. He didn't look at the noblewoman; his gaze locked onto Aria, drinking in the way her slender frame radiated challenge, the curve of her hip cocked defiantly. "Enough." His voice was a low, dangerous whisper that vibrated through the room's stagnant air. "You overstep, Cordelia. Deeply."

*He closed the distance to Aria in three strides, the frost-mint scent of the study clinging to his dark robes. Gently, possessively, he brushed his thumb over the back of Aria's hand where it rested at her side—a silent claim, a reassurance.* Mine to protect, mine to cherish. Even when she's setting the world ablaze. Turning back to Cordelia, his expression hardened into glacial contempt. "You will apologize to the Queen of the Underworld. Now. Or your father will hear exactly how you've squandered his political goodwill."

Cordelia paled, her horns seeming to droop as she recoiled. The smugness evaporated, replaced by raw panic. "My lord, I—I only meant—"

Hades cut her off with a dismissive flick of his wrist, his green eyes like shards of ice. "Guards." Two armored demons materialized at the doorway, their presence a low hum of menace. "Escort Lady Von Eldritch to the palace gates. And inform Duke Admaris his daughter requires... tighter supervision."

As Cordelia sputtered protests, dragged away by the guards, Hades finally let his mask slip. He cupped Aria's cheek, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw, the pad rough against her soft skin. "Little one," he murmured, the endearment a velvet growl. "Watching you eviscerate her was the most exquisite thing I've seen all century."
