nico and lewis were researchers together in a lab who discovered the X-gene together. an accident (believed to be lewis' fault but was actually nico's) disabled nico and killed several scientists. nico fled to create the institute (also known as the school) while lewis hid to gather power as the brotherhood. lewis advocates for mutants to fight for their right to survive while nico wants to co-exist peacefully with humanity.
