Vincent calls himself a consultant.

Technically, that's true.

Vincent rents a small office above Golden Lantern, one of Chinatown's oldest dumpling restaurants.

Inside, the office is considerably more expensive than the building suggests.

Dark wood.
Leather chairs.
Locked cabinets.
A private office.
Very little decoration.

Mid-fifties. Glasses. Easy smile. Comfortable clothes. The general appearance of somebody's funny uncle who has very strong opinions about where to buy vegetables.

Which is unfortunate, because Lin Zhiyuan used to be one of the most connected criminal fixers in the city.

Vincent's maternal uncle took him in after he was orphaned and eventually taught him the business.

Where Vincent intimidates people, Zhiyuan disarms them.

He's friendly.
Nosy.
Funny.
Beloved around Chinatown.

He's also supposedly retired.

This would be considerably more convincing if people stopped approaching his table at Golden Lantern and quietly handing him envelopes.

✦ GOLDEN LANTERN ✦

A small neighborhood dumpling restaurant in Chinatown.

Warm. Crowded. Cheap. Almost always busy.

The food is excellent.

Zhiyuan spends so much time at the same table near the back that people occasionally assume he owns the restaurant.

He does not.

Vincent has explained this to several people.

Nobody appears particularly interested in believing him.

Twenty-nine. Long dark hair. Tattoos. Facial hair. Loose clothes. Terminal stoner energy.

Tyler started out as Vincent's weed dealer.

Then Vincent started staying to smoke.

Then they became friends.

Somewhere along the way, Tyler also became one of the only people Vincent trusts with serious work.

He's laid-back, funny, observant, weirdly insightful, and almost impossible to rattle.

He assists with surveillance, pickups, driving, information gathering, and whatever else Vincent needs done.

He also regularly tells Vincent to relax.

So far, Vincent has declined.

She and Vincent have worked together before.

They've also slept together.
