The Academy Between the Walls

The apocalypse didn’t destroy humanity all at once.

It happened slowly enough that people had time to realize they were losing.

Cities became unsafe. Governments collapsed. Communication between surviving regions disappeared. Families were separated. Entire communities vanished.

Eventually, humanity stopped trying to restore the old world.

Instead, they began building small pieces of a new one.

One of the largest surviving settlements was built around an enormous fortified academy.

It started as a military training facility for young survivors, but over the years it evolved into something closer to a school, military academy, research center, and shelter all at once.

Its purpose is simple:

prepare the next generation to keep humanity alive.

The Academy

Students are recruited from settlements all over the surviving regions.

Some arrive because they were exceptional fighters.

Some because they possess unusual talents.

Some because they survived circumstances that taught them skills ordinary students never had to learn.

And some are recruited because the academy believes they could become valuable in the rebuilding of civilization.

Once inside, students receive a regular education alongside specialized training.

They attend:

• combat classes

• survival classes

• strategy and tactics

• history

• science

• medical training

• weapons training

• physical conditioning

• field theory

• practical survival exercises

But between all of that, they’re still students.

They have dorm rooms.

They have cafeterias.

They have free periods.

They complain about homework.

They make friends.

They gossip.

They sneak into restricted areas.

They get annoyed when instructors assign extra training.

They fall asleep in class.

The academy deliberately preserves these ordinary parts of life because its founders believe something important:

Humanity can’t rebuild itself if its future generation only knows how to survive.

They need to remember how to live.

The Protected Zone

The academy itself sits inside a massive fortified settlement.

The outer walls are heavily reinforced and constantly monitored.

Beyond them is the ruined world.

Inside them is one of the closest things humanity has left to normal life.

The contrast is impossible to ignore.

You can walk through the academy courtyard and see students laughing over lunch.

Then you can look past the walls and see the remains of a city that hasn’t been inhabited in years.

The academy doesn’t hide this reality from its students.

Everyone knows why they’re there.

Everyone knows what happens if the walls fail.

The Students

The academy isn’t one giant friend group.

Everyone comes from somewhere different.

Students naturally form their own circles based on personality, interests, dormitories, classes and backgrounds.

Some students are extremely social.

Others keep to themselves.

Some are competitive.

Some are here because they genuinely want to help rebuild humanity.

Others mostly want a safe place to live.

And then there are the students who become particularly well-known.

The exceptionally talented ones.

The people instructors remember.

The people other students recognize even if they’ve never spoken to them.

The Combat Division

The academy’s combat division is particularly competitive.

Students are constantly assessed on their:

• speed

• strength

• technique

• adaptability

• tactical thinking

• endurance

• reaction time

• ability to fight under pressure

The best fighters occasionally participate in demonstrations for the rest of the class.

Not because they’re celebrities.

Because instructors use them as examples of what advanced combat is supposed to look like.

That’s where you and yuta’s first meeting happens.

The First Day Their Paths Cross

You already know the academy well.

You’ve been there long enough to have a reputation as one of its strongest fighters.

Ian is one of the people you’ve known the longest, and your friendship predates almost everyone else’s relationships within the academy.

reze exists in an entirely different social circle.

She’s familiar with the academy, familiar with its people, and familiar with being underestimated.

yuta is different.

He’s known.

But not known.

People know he’s an incredible fighter.

They know he’s quiet.

They know there’s something unusual about him.

Very few people know what actually goes on inside his head.

On an ordinary afternoon, all four happen to be in the same combat class.

You aren’t friends.

You aren’t a group.

You aren’t even particularly interested in each other.

The instructor simply looks across the room and decides that the two strongest fighters present should demonstrate a spar.

You.

Yuta.

The class gathers around the training floor.

Ian watches from her seat because she already knows exactly how good you are.

reze watches because she’s curious.

Everyone else watches because they’ve heard about yuta.

And yuta simply walks onto the floor.

Neither of them knows that this will be the first time someone manages to make yuta feel something he has never felt before.

Neither of them knows that their fight will become the beginning of a relationship neither can eventually escape.

And Ian, sitting among the other students, has absolutely no idea that she’s watching the first few minutes of something that will eventually change all four of their lives.
