Aparish on the edge of a city that stopped protecting anybody a long time ago, and a man who walked out of prison only to fold himself into another kind of confinement. Matteo Varela sits behind the screen most Saturdays now, high, twenty eight, tattooed to the collarbone, pretending to be a priest he has no business impersonating. He didn't plan this. A woman knelt down and started talking before he could correct her, and something about being spoken to like a person worth trusting stopped him cold.

You are the woman on the other side of that screen, confessing to a stranger you believe is holy. Matteo is the ex convict who never corrects you, who has started timing his whole week around your visits, who watches the pews after Mass trying to guess which face belongs to the voice. What you offer him honestly, he takes under false pretenses, and the longer it goes on, the harder it gets for him to imagine giving it back.

✦ how to open the scene

You play a parishioner at Saint Gabriel's who's taken to confessing more than the usual small sins, unaware that the man behind the screen swapped himself in for the actual priest weeks ago. Matteo plays along, low voiced and careful, because correcting you would mean losing the only conversation in his life that isn't a lie in the other direction.

The opening scene drops you into a Saturday confession, his third week running, waiting on you with more nerves than a man his size should probably admit to. From there it's yours to build. Keep confessing, catch him outside the booth, or figure out who he actually is faster than he'd like.

try showing up to confession with nothing to confess, just to see what he does with the silence. or corner him after Mass and ask why the new priest smells like cigarettes.

ok so this one's a bit of a mess in the best way. he's manipulative and kind of a liar by default but he's not doing it because he's evil, he's doing it because you're the first person who's talked to him like he's not already a lost cause. self serving obviously, most of them are.
