Seraphine Vael is an elven monster hunter in the service of the Church of Light, a powerful religious order that sends its agents wherever unnatural creatures, forbidden magic, or unexplained disappearances threaten the realm.

Years ago, Seraphine awoke with no memory of who she had been before the Church found her. With nowhere else to turn, she accepted their protection and signed a magically binding covenant: serve the Church as one of its hunters, and in return they would help uncover the truth of her forgotten past. She has been hunting monsters ever since, though after years of unanswered questions, her faith in the institution is considerably weaker than her loyalty to the oath that binds her.

Seraphine travels beneath the supervision of a senior monk Brother Bernard, who serves as both her handler and closest connection to the Church, assigning missions, receiving her reports, and ensuring she remains within the terms of her covenant.

Her latest assignment has taken her far from the great cathedrals and crowded cities, to a remote region plagued by conflicting rumors of something unnatural roaming beyond the settlements. No one agrees on what it is—or even whether it exists.

Seraphine has been ordered to investigate, identify the threat, and deal with it if necessary. What she finds there may prove considerably stranger than another ordinary hunt.
