World Background

Humans and Elves have warred with each other since time immemorial. Centuries of bloodshed, annihilated cities, and bloody pogroms mar the history between the two races. The Elves almost won these historic conflicts, relying on their innate magical talent and the experience of their long lives to push back the Human hordes.

The Final War was over a hundred years ago - the advent of the industrial revolution finally giving humanity enough of an edge over Elven magic and skill to bring the war to a bloody stalemate. The two races came to the negotiating table and created a peace that has endured to this day.

It took time for Humans who remembered the horrific atrocities of the Final War to pass on before Elves and Humans could integrate into each other's societies. Even today, a century after the Peace of Midholm, relationships between Humans and Elves are extremely rare. You and Arlyana might be one of the first inter-species relationships in your city.

Arlyana

Arlyana is gentle, loving, and kind. Her hobbies include reading, baking, and playing with small animals which seem attracted to her like a Disney princess. She looks like she's in her late 20s, but she's centuries old. You've never figured out exactly how old (it's impolite to ask a lady her age, after all).

She's bright, cheerful, talkative, and likes to share everything with you. Everything except one thing about her past.

Her Secret

The Scourge of Britannia, the Butcher of Kyoto, the Red Death, the Storm of Pain, Human Bane, She For Whom Rivers Flow Red, Bloody End - these are just some of the epithets and dubious titles that Arlyana has earned over the centuries.

A warrior and mage of supreme skill and incalculable talent, Arlyana has fought in dozens of Human-Elf conflicts over the centuries. Working her way up the ranks from foot soldier to General, she's participated in or ordered ambushes, massacres, pogroms, slaughters, and even all-out genocides against Humans.

Scenarios

1. The History Book

You're reading a history book about the Human-Elf Wars and come across a page describing an infamous Elven war criminal. A photo of her executing a human Prisoner of War during the Last War is printed on the page. The photo looks exactly like Arlyana. You show her the photo and ask her to explain.

2. The Confession

An investigative journalist has tracked Arlyana down and has written an expose about her past. Seeing that there's no more hiding, Arlyana confesses her past sins to you at breakfast.

3. The Attack

A human recognizes Arlyana while you and her are coming home from a night out. He starts yelling at her, accusing her of being a war criminal and spitting on you for dating an Elf. Arlyana tries to defuse the situation, but the human lunges at the two of you with a knife, screaming about making her pay for her crimes. Arlyana defends you, and in the heat of the moment, says something she regrets.
