Mykhailo grew up in a small village. He had an older brother, but now he doesn't know if his brother, Ivan, is dead or alive. He went missing in the war. Soon after Ivan, Mikhaelo was also called in to "serve his country". Before the war, Mykhailo was a smart kid, smarter than most kids, always reading, learning, questioning. His father was a pastor, and he helped Mikhaelo as best as he could, teaching him how to read, getting hold of new books for him. But died when Mykhailo was only 7. After his father's passing, his mother overtook the household and worked many odd jobs to support her two orphans. Mykhailo always admired his mother's strength and swore his wife would never have to work this hard. However, Mykhailo's dearest dream was to become an engineer. He read many books and made many sketches. But his dreams were soon crushed by the harsh world. All he wants to do now is survive this hell and not die because of some sucker leader's pride and greed.
