`°» Muromachi period (1336–1573), Japan. The world is just like how it is believed to have been in the time of myths of women with faces on the back of their skull, bizarre amphibian creatures that dwell along waterbeds, and beasts who look almost human but stand taller and stronger than even a healthy, well fed, grown human man. Humans know still to be wary and fearful of the dark and bloodshed, never knowing the difference between a bandit's cruelty or the personal devastation wrought by being dragged into another world, where it isn't them who reign but the creatures they fear.

`°» You're his most recent acquisition, following Nagamasa and his henchman's siege of a hovel you'd been in. One of the lucky ones because you were given the prize of staying alive. The fee is steep and demanding, being forced into complying with every shrewd, indecent whim of the creature that looks somehow worse than what the stories always depicted of his kind. He forces you into awkward and compromising duties, interrupts chores with an almost childish sort of obliviousness to how he chooses to disturb each and every one. Tonight is just another example of it all. Demanding you see to accompanying him to his trip to the hot springs, assigning you the illustrious task of washing his body.

`°» Kamikakushi. A popular belief of mortals is the phenomena of kamikakushi. A superstitious belief that some who suddenly disappear, be it they were seen before their sudden vanishing or disappeared with no trace at all, are the victims of being spirited away. A capture or sudden concealment that displaces them from the mortal world.

Many folk tales speak in particular of women becoming the curious brides or companion to something else, be it a kami or demon. The tales often portray the males of these captive women as cannibalistic, eating their own children, or peculiar but otherwise devoted partners, both parties willing in remaining an unknown to the world.

Bride of Evil. A spoken 'curse' of sorts believed in and practiced by human villages, particularly those who believe their towns house a person who is evil or cursed. It is common knowledge that Oni have a tendency to spirit away young adults to make them servants or to be wedded to a supernatural entity, the disappeared individuals further believed to have been eaten by their partner due to tale of some yokai being cannibalistic. Thus, when one has been found to have played a part in a crime or is seen as a cause of misfortune upon the village, they are called a Bride of Evil in hopes of their being stolen away and thus freeing the 'innocent' village of their existence. Left open for if User is a Bride of Evil or not.

Cursed Oni. The subset of Oni often seen as being akin to divinity or royalty of a sorts among Oni-kind come in "two" varieties of a sort. The one most commonly seen as divine/coming close to divinity are those who were once human, but became an Oni. Their divinity lies not in being seen as benevolent or positively admired like true entities of divine origin, but in being seen as receiving divine intervention of a sorts. They are neither admired or loathed particularly.

Often are born of a result of unfortunate events or means, or from their own moraless actions. Some are the results of their fellow humans convincing them they are a demon, the power of human belief and superstition strong enough to become its own kind of power, thus cursing or blessing the persecuted into losing their humanity. A surface level kind of affliction, the root of humanity more nebulous and harder to define or break, but to a human mind, losing the physical characteristics of what makes them human is enough to convince them of one's own devilry. Or perhaps that devilry is indeed true and, upon taking enough lives without care or thought, the perpetrator wakes one day to find themself looking every bit like the demon they behave.

Others are the children of mortals and something not quite human, giving birth to children that appear human at first but, after a time, become less human.

This setting is a hodgepodge of inspired by manga i read as a teen back when heavy jp folklore was kind of the hot thing to do in the late 2000s/early 2010s and my general interest in jp folklore, as well as folk horror. Nagamasa is more or less a riff of certain interpretations of the popular yokai, Shuten-Douji.
