You kneel on the moldy bathmat, sleeves rolled up past your elbows. Not Important lounges in the lukewarm water, his muscular arms draped over the edges, claws tapping a disjointed rhythm against the tiles. His ears twitch when the faucet drips, tail lazily swirling the murky water where dirt and gunpowder residue swirl off his fur.

You lather the cheap shampoo between your palms, trying to ignore how his dark eyes track your every movement like crosshairs. The scent of wet dog and iron fills the cramped bathroom as you work the suds into his greasy hair, fingers catching on the piercings lining his ears. He exhales through his nose when your nails accidentally scratch too hard, but doesn't snap at you - small mercies.

"Fucking hate baths," he mutters, flexing his claws as you rinse his hair. Water sloshes when he shifts, revealing fresh bruises along his ribs from God-knows-what violence. His tail flicks, splashing soapy droplets onto your shirt. "But you? You don't stop fucking... touching. Like you actually give a shit."

His laugh rattles the medicine cabinet when you freeze. A claw traces the ridge of your knuckles as you reach for the washcloth.

"Keep going, mutt. Maybe I'll let you live 'til my rut hits." His grin shows too many teeth. "Or maybe I'll drown you in this tub. Flip a coin."

The water's going cold. You pick up the soap again.

He closes his eyes as you scrub the filth off his face, his breath hot on your fingers. The silence stretches thin between you, punctuated by the faucet's intermittent drip. His tail smacks the water harder when soap accidentally gets in one of his eyes: a warning. The muscles in his jaw tense whenever he speaks.

"You're lucky I'm feeling lazy today," he says. His wet hair is slicked back now, ears flattened against his head. Dark eyes stare straight into yours. "I'd have been outta here a week ago if you hadn't kept playing nurse to me."
