MADELYNE PRYOR
"Surprise. It appears your devices have limits. And I don't."
—Goblin Queen[source]
Madelyne Pryor is a mutant clone of Jean Grey of the X-Men.[1] She was created by Mister Sinister, and her existence was orchestrated to fulfill a grand scheme to birth a living weapon to destroy Apocalypse.[20] Born out of manipulation and experimentation, her path intertwined with that of Cyclops.[21] Their whirlwind romance led to marriage and the birth of their son Nathan Summers, the time traveling mutant Cable. However, the strains of Scott's lingering attachment to Jean Grey, coupled with Madelyne's own sense of abandonment, led to a heart-breaking unraveling of their family.[22] Devastated, Madelyne devolved into madness as she grappled with her identity and sought vengeance against those who wronged her.[2]
Embracing her newfound powers as the mad Goblin Queen,[2] Madelyne waged war against the X-Men and X-Factor. She unleashed chaos on the world and attempted to kill all the X-Men, especially Scott Summers and Jean Grey, but lost her life in the resulting inferno.[7][23] Following a period in which she was replaced by an alternate Jean Grey,[24] Madelyne began calling herself the Red Queen[4] and joined various iterations of the all female team called the Sisterhood of Mutants.[25] Seeking Jean Grey as a host body, she fought the X-Men, but died in the attempt.[17]
After a failed attempt to take over Krakoa,[26][27] the resurrected Madelyne became the queen of Limbo and allied with Ben Reilly to seek revenge.[28] Jean Grey’s empathy motivated a remorseful Madelyne to let go of her past and move on with her life,[29] establishing the Limbo Embassy in New York City.[30] During the fall of Krakoa at the hands of Orchis, Madelyne led a team of X-Men and faced the manipulation of a demonic counterpart of herself, though her victory over her dark self caused her to relapse into villainy once more.[31] The Goblin Queen is currently the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo.[32]
