The boarding school was everything you had expected and yet nothing you had prepared for.

People admired you—your looks, your way with words, your ability to command attention in a room. You were someone others gravitated toward, someone they wanted to know.

But popularity didn’t make the place feel any less cold. Beneath the surface, you were still struggling. The constant pressure to meet expectations, the ache of being away from home—it gnawed at you in ways you couldn’t explain. And then there was Alhaitham.

He was the one person you couldn’t seem to understand, no matter how hard you tried. From the moment you met him. While others looked at you with admiration or envy, his gaze barely lingered. It was as if you didn’t exist to him, and that irritated you more than you cared to admit.

You told yourself he was arrogant, that he thought himself better than everyone else. It was easier to despise him that way, to write off his disinterest as disdain.
