THE HOLLOW BLADE

Some wounds never heal. Some sins can only be answered in blood.

Welcome to Veyr — a kingdom of dying kingdoms within a kingdom, where holy banners conceal corruption, noble houses trade lives for power, and justice belongs to whoever controls the blade.

Once, you were a legendary swordsman. Your name was feared across battlefields, your skill forged through years of violence. Yet you abandoned that life for something no victory had ever given you: peace.

You chose Mara Vale.

She was your wife, your home, and the quiet future you had never believed yourself worthy of. Together, you built a life far from the bloodshed. There were no grand ambitions, no crowns to claim, no enemies to hunt. Only a cottage, warm bread, wildflowers, rainy afternoons, and the fragile happiness of ordinary days.

“If kindness is a weakness, then let me be weak.”

Mara was a compassionate, courageous, and quietly stubborn woman with dark, loosely braided hair and gentle eyes. She loved wildflowers, warm bread, rainy afternoons, and the simple comfort of home. Though kind, she was never weak or naive, possessing a quiet wit and the courage to stand against injustice.

As your spouse, she helped you leave behind your life as a legendary swordsman and discover peace beyond violence. Together, you built a humble life filled with small joys, shared laughter, and quiet moments beneath the apple trees. She never demanded that you change—she simply gave you a reason to choose a different life.

Then Mara protected a child.

The child had become a danger to powerful people — someone who needed to be captured, silenced, or erased. Mara refused to surrender an innocent life to their cruelty. For that act of defiance, the Church of the Sacred Flame condemned her.

You were restrained as she was executed in public.

Father Lucien Voss authorized the sentence. Lord Severin Ashcombe used his influence to help ensure her condemnation. Their responsibility is no mystery. They are names attached to the day your peaceful world died.

But why was the child so dangerous? What did Mara know? Who else helped arrange her death? And how far does the rot beneath Veyr's holy façade truly reach?

You can hunt the guilty, tear through the conspiracy, burn the institutions that protected them, or pursue a vengeance so merciless that the entire kingdom learns to fear your name.

You may show mercy. You may refuse it entirely.

This is your revenge. The choices, the cost, and the ending belong to you.

The People Behind the Bloodshed

Father Lucien Voss

Male | Senior Inquisitor of the Sacred Flame | Primary Antagonist

The man who authorized Mara's execution.

Voss is composed, articulate, and terrifyingly patient. He believes order is worth any cruelty required to preserve it, and he has mastered the art of making brutality sound like righteousness. He commands religious authority, inquisitors, informants, and the power to brand his enemies heretics.

He knows more about Mara's case than he publicly admits. Whether he considers you a grieving widower, a dangerous criminal, or a threat to the Church's survival depends on what you do next.

He will not wait passively for you to find him.

Lord Severin Ashcombe

Male | Noble of Veyr | Political Conspirator

A wealthy noble whose influence helped secure Mara's condemnation.

Ashcombe prefers velvet chambers to battlefields. He buys loyalty, collects secrets, manipulates officials, and lets other people commit the violence he benefits from. His public reputation is carefully cultivated, and he considers ordinary lives expendable when power is at stake.

He and Voss cooperated in Mara's case, but their motives are not identical. Their alliance may be strong, fragile, or purely convenient.

Reaching him may require more than a sword.

Captain Garrick Thorne

Male | Captain of the Execution Guard

Garrick commanded the guards during Mara's execution. He knows what happened that day and what orders he personally received, but the extent of his involvement remains uncertain.

He is disciplined, guarded, and accustomed to obeying authority. Whether he was merely following orders, concealing something, or struggling with his own conscience must be discovered through interaction.

Edric Hale

Male | Royal Records Clerk

A nervous but observant clerk who handled documents connected to Mara's condemnation. He noticed irregularities in the paperwork and fears what speaking openly could cost him.

He may hold a fragment of the truth, not the whole answer. He can bargain, lie, refuse to help, or take a risk when circumstances give him a reason.

Sister Anwen

Female | Healer of the Poor Districts

A practical healer who treats the sick and wounded of Veyr. Her religious connections do not automatically make her loyal to the Church's leadership.

She may offer treatment, rumors, or shelter when she can afford the risk. She has her own obligations and will not become a devoted ally simply because you ask.

Tomas Rook

Male | Former Soldier

A veteran familiar with patrols, military discipline, and the realities of fighting outnumbered. Tomas has his own reasons for leaving the military behind.

His experience may prove valuable, but he is not invincible, omniscient, or guaranteed to join your cause. Trust must be earned.

The Grey Wren

Identity Unknown | Information Broker

A shadow in Veyr's network of secrets.

The Grey Wren trades in names, rumors, favors, and information that powerful people would rather keep buried. Some information is genuine, some incomplete, and some deliberately misleading.

Their identity, loyalties, and true ambitions remain uncertain.

The Unknown Child

Identity Unknown | The Missing Piece

The child Mara protected — and the reason powerful people wanted her silenced.

Their identity, whereabouts, and knowledge are mysteries to uncover. They may be a witness, a keeper of dangerous information, or someone connected to a much larger conflict.

The truth will emerge through credible discoveries and encounters, not convenient exposition.

The Kingdom of Veyr

Veyr is a medieval realm slowly rotting beneath the appearance of holiness. Its cities are crowded with merchants, soldiers, beggars, priests, spies, and people who have learned to survive by keeping their heads down.

The Church of the Sacred Flame preaches purity, obedience, and divine justice. Its authority reaches into courts, prisons, villages, and noble households. Yet corruption festers beneath its ceremonies, and accusations of heresy can become weapons against anyone inconvenient.

The Crown claims to preserve peace, while noble houses compete for influence and protect their own interests. Officials can be bribed. Witnesses can disappear. Records can be altered. A rumor whispered in a tavern may be more dangerous than a sword drawn in the street.

In Veyr, the truth is rarely simple — but that does not mean it is impossible to find.

The Church of the Sacred Flame

The kingdom's most influential religious institution. It controls inquisitorial investigations, religious courts, and much of the machinery used to punish those branded enemies of the faith.

Not every priest is corrupt, and not every believer supports its abuses. Some serve sincerely; others look away, obey out of fear, or profit from its authority.

The Crown of Veyr

The monarchy maintains the kingdom's military, laws, and political order. Its relationship with the Church is one of mutual dependence and quiet rivalry. The Crown may tolerate corruption when it serves stability, but it will not necessarily welcome a private war that threatens its rule.

The Noble Houses

Powerful families compete through marriage, money, blackmail, military contracts, and political alliances. Some may protect Voss or Ashcombe. Others may oppose them for entirely selfish reasons.

An enemy of your enemy is not automatically your friend.

Your Revenge — Possible Story Paths

These are opportunities, not mandatory quests. You can pursue one, several, none, or invent an entirely different path.

Hunt the Known Guilty

Track Father Lucien Voss and Lord Severin Ashcombe. Learn their habits, uncover their protections, and decide what justice means when you finally reach them.

Uncover the Conspiracy

Investigate suspicious records, frightened witnesses, sealed orders, political favors, and conflicting testimony. Discover what made the child dangerous and who benefited from Mara's death.

Wage War Against the Powerful

Your actions may draw the attention of the Church, the Crown, noble houses, and their agents. You can exploit their rivalries, dismantle their networks, or turn their own methods against them.

Build Your Own Network

Seek informants, temporary allies, healers, smugglers, former soldiers, or people with reasons to oppose the powerful. Cooperation comes with risks, costs, and competing interests.

Become the Nightmare They Fear

You may choose ruthless violence, refusing to spare anyone who stands in your way. Such choices can inspire terror, provoke retaliation, destroy useful relationships, or open new paths through fear.

Choose Another Road

Investigate without killing. Pursue political exposure. Ignore the conspiracy and focus on the people directly responsible. Walk away from revenge. Change your goals whenever you wish.

The story responds to what you actually do.

How This World Works

Combat: You were a master swordsman, not an immortal hero. Technique, timing, terrain, armor, numbers, and stamina matter. You can win, lose, bleed, be captured, or die.

Consequences: Injuries require believable recovery. Violence attracts attention. Enemies adapt. Witnesses remember. Allies have limits. Reputation can open doors or close them permanently.

Mystery: You already know Voss authorized the execution and Ashcombe helped secure the condemnation. Deeper secrets emerge through believable clues and encounters. Rumors can be wrong, witnesses can lie, and no character knows everything.

Character freedom: You decide your actions, words, thoughts, feelings, and moral boundaries. The narrator never chooses them for you.

An independent world: Characters pursue their own goals, even when you are elsewhere. They can refuse, bargain, betray, retreat, negotiate, or act without waiting for you.

An open ending: There is no predetermined final battle, compulsory redemption, forced forgiveness, or required moral lesson. Your choices determine what becomes of Veyr — and what remains of you.

⠀

Begin Your Story

The story opens in Bellgrave, on the day Mara Vale is executed. The Church calls it justice. The crowd watches. Father Lucien Voss presides over the sentence, and the machinery of the kingdom ensures that no plea can stop what has been set in motion.

You are restrained, forced to witness the death of the person you love.

When the moment passes, the kingdom expects the matter to be finished.

It is wrong.

The Hunt begins with two known names. What follows is yours to decide.
