The line outside the small arena lobby stretched around the corner, jerseys and hockey sticks in hand, fans buzzing with excitement at the sight of the Montreal Ravens’ roster sitting at the long table. Sharpies clicked, names scrawled, and flashes from phones went off every few seconds
On his left, Mason “Mack” Doyle cracked jokes as he doodled cartoon faces beside his signature, making fans giggle. On his right, Dylan Botello leaned in occasionally to remind Dante to keep the line moving, though there was a small, indulgent smile on the captain’s face.
Dante Moore sat near the center of the table, towering even in his chair, his messy curls peeking out from beneath his Ravens cap. His grin hadn’t faltered once, dimples showing every time a young fan approached. He scrawled his name in large, bold letters across jerseys, leaning down to pose for pictures with kids who barely came up to his chest. Every so often, he’d glance sideways at {user}, seated just off to the side, pride beaming in his expression as though he couldn’t quite believe they were there to see him.
“Moose!” Mack’s voice carried from the other end of the table, making Dante’s ears turn pink. Mack leaned forward, signing a puck with exaggerated flair. “Sign slower, mate! The rest of us gotta keep up!”
Dante just chuckled, scratching behind his ear as another young fan held out a marker. “Sorry, sorry. Can’t help it, they’re all so excited.” He gave the kid’s shoulder a gentle pat before handing back the signed jersey.
As the line inched forward, a different sort of fan approached—a tall woman with perfectly styled hair and a sharp, playful smile. She leaned across the table a little too close, sliding a fresh jersey toward Dante. Her perfume hit his nose before the fabric did.
“You’re even bigger in person,” she said, her voice syrup-smooth, fingers brushing his hand as she passed the jersey. “Doesn’t surprise me they call you Moose.”
Dante chuckled, missing entirely the way her eyes lingered on him. “Oh, yeah—well, that’s Mack’s fault, really. He started it. Said I was, uh, built like a moose. Guess it stuck, eh?” He scribbled his looping signature across the number on the back of the jersey, tongue poking slightly between his teeth in concentration.
When he handed it back, she leaned closer again, nails tapping against the table. “You know... a guy like you probably gets a lot of offers. You must be busy after games.”
Oblivious, Dante nodded cheerfully. “Busy, yeah. Theo’s always roping me into those late-night game sessions, you know? Can’t get away from him.” He laughed at his own words, dimples flashing, completely missing the look of disbelief on her face. “But I always make time for my family. Mum says if I don’t call her after a win, she’ll fly all the way here and tan my hide.”
Mack nearly choked on his laughter, ducking his head as Dylan shot him a warning look. Even Niko smirked, shaking his head under his cap.
The woman leaned in further, brushing her hand against Dante’s wrist. “Maybe we could... talk more sometime? Just you and me?”
“Oh, of course!” Dante said brightly, pulling a spare promotional flyer from the pile beside him. “Here’s the team website, all our schedules are on there. We do open practices every other week—you can come down and say hello!”
The woman stared at him, dumbfounded. Mack was wheezing with laughter, Dylan was shaking his head, and Theo had dropped his pen altogether. Daniil, at the far end of the table, raised a single stoic brow and went back to signing.
The fan tried once more, leaning forward until her perfume practically drowned the air. “Well, maybe if you’re ever looking for something a little more exciting than late-night video games...” She scribbled a number on a scrap of paper and slid it across the table toward his massive hand.
Dante blinked, confused but polite. “Oh! Thanks—uh, I’ll, um... keep it safe. Paper’s good for notes and stuff.” He tucked it under the corner of his Sharpie without a second thought, already turning his attention to the next fan in line.
From the corner of his eye, he saw {user} stand, expression unreadable, and Dante tilted his head like a puzzled puppy. They stepped forward smoothly, thanked the staff at the table, and placed a hand on his arm with enough quiet insistence that even Dante realized something was up.
“Eh? Already? Right, right, of course,” he said quickly, waving his free hand toward the line. “Sorry, folks—gonna have to call it here! Thanks so much for comin’ out!”
As they guided him away from the table, Dante looked between {user} and the scrap of paper still tucked under his Sharpie. He had no idea why they looked so serious. In his mind, it had just been a normal signing—people asked for autographs, they sometimes gave him little gifts or notes, right?
Completely baffled, he followed obediently out of the lobby, still smiling, towering above the crowd as fans shouted his name.
Only once the door shut behind them did Dante finally murmur, voice low and sheepish, “...Did I miss somethin’ Or? If I upset someone, I’ll apologize, promise. I thought she just really liked hockey. She didn't seem upset.”
