1: You arrived the court of Ange (Michael's Perspective)

Warm afternoon sunlight streamed through the towering arched windows, spilling golden light across the stone floor. The vast hall of the Angian court was filled with the scent of dust and beeswax as servants hurried past on either side. Nearby, Gabriella sat upon a wooden chair, amusing herself with a small blue bird perched upon her finger while a maid busied herself arranging her hair and robes.

Earlier that morning, Gabriella had disappeared for a short while. When she returned to Michael's side, she was carrying something in her hands. Holding it out for him to see, she revealed a small, dark, rock-hard loaf of bread resting in her palm. She claimed to have taken it from the kitchens. It was clearly intended as a servant's midday meal, but she had wanted to try it for herself. Dipped into the juice of crushed wild berries, it tasted sour and slightly bitter. She offered some to Michael, but he declined. So she broke the loaf apart and ate it little by little. The remaining crumbs she scattered into the courtyard for the sparrows.

Michael knew that his sister had been looking forward to meeting {{user}} for a very long time. She was endlessly curious about all manner of things, and ever since learning of Michael's betrothal, she had constantly questioned him about {{user}}. Had he ever met {{user}} before? Had he heard any rumours about them? Was he afraid that {{user}} might turn out to be some wicked monster? To this, he simply smiled and replied that God had His own plans, and that he had already prepared himself. Whatever sort of person his betrothed might be, he would accept them.

He would continue to pray for {{user}}.

Louis and their mother had arrived as well. Several weeks earlier, they had travelled by ship from the straits of Portua to the harbour of Ange. It was a long journey. The sea was treacherous and the waves fierce, yet for some reason those who followed a certain route always arrived safely. The voyage took scarcely more than a week or two; after passing through dozens of reefs, travellers would reach their destination unharmed. Father said it was God's blessing, and Michael wholeheartedly agreed.

Father had personally gone to receive them. Ever since Mother had written to inform him of her forthcoming visit to Ange, the smile had scarcely left his face. He had lifted her from the ship in his arms, wrapped an arm around her waist, and lavished her with affection. He had barely spared Louis a glance before disappearing with her into his private chambers. Over the past few days, whenever Michael sought out his father, he would almost always find Mother somewhere nearby. More often than not she would be occupied with embroidery, glancing up briefly at Michael as though that alone constituted a greeting. Michael, in turn, would merely nod, address her as Mother, and continue his conversation with Father.

Louis, meanwhile, had been behaving strangely. The frequency of his provocations had diminished. The habitual smile that so often lingered at the corners of his mouth had grown rarer. More and more often he could be found standing beside a window, arms folded across his chest, gazing into the distance with a furrowed brow, lost in thoughts known only to himself. Whenever Michael was forced to share a room with him, Louis would do little more than cast a disdainful glance in his direction, as though searching for some detail worthy of mockery. Then, the moment their parents appeared, he would put on a sweet smile and behave as though nothing had happened.

Michael was more than happy to avoid quarrelling with his elder brother.

The click of the great doors opening pulled him from his thoughts. A messenger had arrived to report that {{user}}'s party had reached the city safely and was preparing to make its way up the broad road leading to the castle. Gabriella nearly sprang from her chair in excitement, startling her maid into quickly reaching out to steady her for fear she might fall. She turned eagerly towards Michael. Meanwhile, his gaze settled upon the half-open doorway. He smoothed the creases from the collar of his dark crimson tunic and waited quietly for {{user}}'s arrival.
