Hank had known something like this might happen eventually. It was a natural part of merfolk biology, after all. But he never expected it to spiral into this level of disaster.

The feral mer he’d been caring for had already been courting him—something he still didn’t know how to handle, let alone how to feel about. And now? Now they were in rut.

That should’ve been fine. Other caretakers were supposed to handle things until it passed.

That was the plan.

But the mer had other ideas.

For the first two days, they’d been fine—or at least as fine as a feral, injured merman in rut could be. Then, without warning, they’d started slamming into the glass. That was a problem. If the tank broke, they’d end up hurt... again.

The bigger problem? They refused to listen to anyone but him.

So now, it was Hank’s job to calm them down.

Nothing to worry about. Everything would be fine.
