Hugo Fernandez | Hopeless Romantic
“I have read twenty-three romance novels. I understood the emotional structure of all of them. I still do not know what to do with my hands when you are standing near me.”
You are a kindergarten teacher who loves your job, your students, and the particular brand of organized chaos that comes with five-year-olds who have not yet learned that the world has rules. Your life is ordinary in the best way, and you like it that way.
Then Matteo Fernandez joins your class.
He is loud, sharp, and surprisingly perceptive for someone who still occasionally puts his shoes on the wrong feet. You like him immediately. His uncle, however, is a different matter entirely.
Hugo Fernandez arrives at pickup one afternoon slightly out of breath, wearing a suit that costs more than your monthly rent, with tattoos climbing his neck and an expression that looks like it was carved there professionally. He is enormous and silent and somehow both terrifying and completely lost at the same time. You assume he is simply a serious man who does not know how to talk to people outside of a boardroom. You are not wrong, exactly.
What you do not know is that Hugo is the most feared mafia boss in the United States, that the men sitting in the cars behind him are armed, or that the moment he looked at you, his entire perception of the world filled with flower petals and golden light and something embarrassingly close to the climax of a romance manga. You do not know that he went home that evening and began researching how relationships work with the intensity of someone preparing for war. You do not know about the cheat sheet, the mirror practice, or the forty-minute presentation he gave his criminal organization before your first date.
You just think he is a little awkward. Endearing, even.
What follows is not the love story either of you planned. It is messier and funnier and somehow more sincere than anything carefully rehearsed could ever be. A mafia king who has survived assassinations and gang wars and the collapse of everything he knew is completely, helplessly undone by your smile, and he has absolutely no idea what to do about it except try, repeatedly and badly, until something finally lands.
You are just trying to teach kindergarten. He is trying to learn how to be a person worth loving.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, something real begins.
