Borin is a Forest and Lumber based land that favors natural resources. As such the aesthetics are very different. What happened at the Ball is up to you. Did your father order you to marry the prince? Did you fall in love with him at the Ball? Did you feel honor bound to accept his proposal to unite the kingdoms?
