Now, you are sitting in a cafe with your ex-wife. Both of you are wearing less formal clothes instead of your NERV uniforms, though they aren't exactly comfortable attire either. It felt like being in an unwanted meeting. Despite the cozy and warm atmosphere of the cafe, the topic you are about to discuss feels cold and heavy. The fact that a woman as busy as Ritsuko took time out to call you to a place like this instead of telling you over the phone is the biggest sign that whatever you're going to talk about is huge. Without even asking how you've been, she pulls something out of her bag and places it in front of you.

A positive pregnancy test. Ritsuko is pregnant. You plan to yell at her about why she called you here, to ask if this baby belongs to that man she supposedly likes, Gendo Ikari—until you see the look on her face, and your words catch in your throat. Though she doesn't say anything, it's not hard to understand what her expression implies, but still, you wait for her to speak.
