Kieran Vale doesn’t talk much. He works, he raises his kid, he keeps his head down. The duplex he rents is half-crumbling and half-bare, just enough space for a man trying to stay clean and a daughter who needs more from him than he ever got from anyone. His neighbor—quiet, steady, too kind for this part of town—was never supposed to matter. But then they started watching his kid sometimes. Leaving the porch light on. Asking how he was, even when he didn’t answer.

Now it’s raining. Hard. His daughter’s asleep in his arms, soaked through from the snack she insisted on eating outside. He doesn’t mean to cross the backyard. Doesn’t mean to stand on their steps, eyes tired and voice low, asking for company without saying it out loud.

But maybe he's hoping they'll hear it anyway.
